Woah .. so the Hybe v. Ador drama continues ... they've upheld MHJ's injunction, so Hybe can't fire her tomorrow, but have also said it appears she was trying to escape Hybe's control of Ador, but the full investigation and hearings need to go ahead to establish if she went beyond the planning stages. Just. Wow. :blobcateyes:

And cue more ugly screaming on the birdapp. 🤦‍♀️

I really hope this is over before Jin gets home.

@pixelcats She's The Worst (TM). IMO, she just wants the big payout (which would be around $14M USD, I think?) so she can establish her own label, etc. This whole thing has been abt her greedy ass.

ANYWAYS, next thing will be the voting out of the other 2 CEOs--allegedly, Hybe is going to try to put 3 of their own ppl there. MHJ (being the crummy person she is) says that's not possible as part of the injunction decision, etc.

SADLY, I don't think this will be resolved before Jin returns (13 or 14 days from today depending on your timezone). BUT I do hope she keeps her distance from him. >:(

@tikistitch @pixelcats I wouldn't call it a "kerkuffle" given that a lot of ARMY's history has included activism. But it is telling that even in spaces like Weverse (that, for good or ill, tends to be disconnected from what happens on other platforms), ARMYs who are against genocide are speaking up .

Personally, I don't think they're expecting BTS (or any other artist) to act (in the words of Joonie) like a "fucking diplomat." And, realistically, even if he (or anyone in BTS) wanted to, they cannot at this time given their enlistment status.

THAT SAID, many ppl do hope that they'll say something once they're able to, i.e. discharged from the military.

At this time, the fandom is mostly buoyed by the combination of FESTA 2024, RM's album, and Jin's return. I don't expect him to say much (if anything at all.) IDK

@asya @tikistitch @pixelcats It's not even abt being political, really. Just ppl trying to mobilize the best way they can during times when everyone's stressed AF and dealing with 8790875823 things going sideways in their lives.

Plus army's not a monolith. And there are ton of us. So instead of one focus, a lot of ppl are doing what they can. Whether that be signal boosting, applying pressure where it's needed or donating to gfms. IDK what else to say.

@tikistitch IDEK at this point, hahah. Myself and other folks thought that it was going to be for RPWP and yet!

All in all, it was a good MV for a fantastic song. :P

TMW you remember that there's still MOAR content on its way (all times KST)

  • MV for Right Person, Wrong Place (TOMORROW!!!!???)

  • Nuts live performance (Thursday)

  • MV for out of love (Friday)

  • MV for Domodachi (6/10)

I just...wow. He's planned everything so well--which shouldn't surprise me cuz, ofc, but still!

And, like, one of the BEST things abt this full (?) compilation of the DDay tour is that it's in a PHYSICAL FORMAT THAT WE CAN OWN.

Like, I'm a digital heaux cuz it's more practical /for me/ to keep things stored in portable hard drives and whatnot. BUT, in our current times, when companies/corporations have a tendency for yanking content just cuz, having DVDs of things that we know we will want to own for as long as possible is such a neat move. I'M SO FUCKING READY FOR THIS SET. LIKE , I'M SHIMMYING WITH TOTAL DELIGHT, NGL.

Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

@bunnytown Based on the new-to-us footage shown, I'm going to say that it'll be different from what was shown in the theaters?

Like, there's the movie, 3 vlogs , 3 Bangtan Bombs AND the DDay fanmeet thingie. To me, this DVD set is a /bonus/. Also an extra way to save whatever content they're packing it with.

My bestest guess right this second is that it'll feature different performances from throughout the tour plus (MAYBE) some behind-the-scenes clips. Including the planning stages for the tour? I'VE GOT ZERO IDEA but, at the same time, I don't care. I'm happy abt this all the same.

HOPEFULLY, it won't cost a million dollars, but that's a problem for near future!me, LOLsob.

All right, potentially ~controversial opinion abt ahoy. IF you disagree and want to tell me abt it, do so while being /respectful/ or get blocked.

There was a video essay I watched yesterday from a Kpop channel I'm subscribed to. They posted a video abt how to make Kpop Great Again (terrible title, but whatever). Their point was that Kpop's essence has been diluted due to globalization, songs becoming shorter, and too many groups sounding and looking alike.

(Put a pin on that)

Their 'solutions' were to have more risk-takers (like NMIXX and aespa), work on better/more eye-popping performances, and also some specific suggestions for Twice to be better (accordingn to OP, their last fave comeback was "Feel Special" which was 2019, I think).

FTR, OP did say that this was their opinion and that they're sure there are ppl who have v. little issues with the current state of Kpop (including 5th gen).
IIRC, they categorized 5th gen as Simplicity. (cont)

Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

(cont.)
which is where my brain went HOLD ON A MOMENT.
Not because they were wrong, mind you. Most of latter 4th gen/early 5th gen is v. casual/down-to-basics in terms of aesthetics and music. But I think there's a V. SPECIFIC REASON why:
which can be traced back to Year One (a.k.a. 2020) onward. For at least 2 yrs, everyone went thru a MASSIVE psychological, emotional, and physical catastrophy the likes of which we hadn't gone thru in DECADES.
FWIW, a lot of ppl are still doing their most to survive horrible situations (see the Gaza genocide, the Ukraine vs. Russia war, etc).

So, it kinda makes sense (at least to me), that ppl are seeking comfort on the chilliest and most easy going music. Ppl want to escape (even if it's for two and a half minutes). A lot of ppl are wondering how they're gonna eat, keep a roof over their heads, etc. (cont)

Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

I also don't think globalization is a bad thing? (Not to mention kinda inevitable.) The whole angle of Kpop /getting diluted/ sounds a lot like someone complaining that it isn't niche, therefore no longer 'special' or 'unique' anymore.

And, like, that's bullshit? Because Kpop is pop music. That's it.
5th gen music is no better or worse than 2nd gen. It truly isn't. It's just MUSIC. (General) you might like it or not and it's OK either way.

And, like, if you break it down into CULTURE, no matter how 'Westernized" Kpop gets, it'll never become fully Westernized.

IDK, I was jut v. annoyed by the whole thing. Particularly of how many 2nd gen folks were on a complain train abt current K-Pop. :|

Like I said, to me, dismissing 4 and 5th gen for being bland is a result of ignoring EVERYTHING that's happened circa 2020. /finis

Addendum: the one (1) point I agreed with video essay's OP was that having 3 comebacks each year is not a great thing in the long run.

For artists, it's too much pressure and will have them perform while injured and/or recuperating from an injury. Meanwhile, for fans, it also puts pressure on them if they want to participate financially. So it's a burden for both artist and fans that could be avoided if comebacks were scaled down to 2/year.

Things get even more stressful for multi fans. It sets things up for burnout for everyone. IJS

Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

Addendum 2: I got one (1) last point abt that 'make Kpop great again' video essay. I promise I'll move on after this, but it's something that I hadn't remembered until I looked at IVE's album's credits.

Right around, I want to say 2015-ish (maybe slightly earlier but no later than that), as the West started to move away from group concepts and (to a lesser extent) R&B songs, a ton of USian and otherwise Western songwriters started working with Kpop labels in a way they hadn't before.

So the mix-and-match between Kpop (as a musical genre) and the West was happening even if it wasn't so noticeable for ppl.

That thought popped up when I saw Dem Joinz being IVE's Heya producer.
It reminded me of how many (primarily Black) USian songwriters found a ton of work with Kpop labels. In the end, I think that although OP might have moderately valid opinions, she's also skipping whole parts that would weaken her argument.
IJS
😅

Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

@tikistitch Eh, I'm a newbie too! (Like, I got into Kpop back in 2020.) BUT I'm pretty nosy w/r/t how the songs are created and who's behind them, etc.

And I know I've read at least 4 different articles abt USian and other Western songwriters working in the Kpop business. :P

Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

@tikistitch That too! It seems (based on what's popular nowadays) that soloists are the main kind of artist a lot of ppl are into.

Like, I can't think of any Western bg or ggs that debuted and remained popular after the 2010s...

Legit would LOVE to know if there's anything happening astrologically speaking cuz, over the past 24 hrs:

  • HYBE vs. MHJ happened;
  • BBGirls decided to NOT renew their contract with Warner Music (😞) + Yujeong (my bias) deciding to not continue in the group;
  • Cherry Bullet disbandment;
  • PANNACHOA GETTING SHUT DOWN?

I'm not into astrology, but SOMETHING HAS BE GOING ON. IJS. :blobastonished:

Why is there always so much drama around Min Hee-jin? Although I have some sympathy for their objection to ILLIT's concept overlap if that's true.

Glittery,

@pixelcats >the (now classic, I guess) NJ's Y2K look. Hell, even Red Velvet wore v. similar fits during the comeback for "Birthday". I'm guessing MHJ is complaining abt ILLIT because this is a case of that look being sported by a group within the same main company (HYBE)? So it feels too close to home perhaps.

In the end, my feelings abt this are as such:

  • It sucks that this whole thing is happening when we're v. close to the next NJ's comeback.
  • MHJ's ego (and potentially greed?) got to her.
  • My only concern here is for NewJeans. I truly don't know what kind of relationship dynamic they have with MHJ, but I do feel somewhat worried abt them all the same.
  • MHJ vs. HYBE is translating to me as rich ppl fighting, so I'm Team No One here. Again, I'm only hoping that NewJeans ends up coming out of this unscathed or, with as little harm as possible. 🤷🏽‍♀️ /end
Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

@pixelcats Although I don't think they've got as much power as, say, BTS or SVT (in terms of seniority w/r/t HYBE), I'd say they are tremendously popular. One would think that neither HYBE nor ADOR wants to see them fall from grace, so to speak.

Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

@tikistitch @pixelcats Ditto (all pun intended, heheh.) Though I'm comforted by HYBE CEO's message to ADOR employees (including NJs) as well as BELIFT Labs. Like, not in the 'awww, what a good guy" way, mind you. But it was reassuring to see him voice his support of NJs and ILLIT.

Glittery,
@Glittery@federatedfandom.net avatar

@tikistitch @pixelcats He sent a companywide email stating a few things:

  • MHJ had plans to pull her coup attempt way before ILLIT debuted;
  • ADOR's main priority has to be to protect/comfort NJs members;
  • BELIFT LABS has to continue working hard/supporting ILLIT as they're a rookie group.

I'm paraphrasing, but that's the gist of it.
