Flying the US flag upside down on ship is apparently a distress signal.

(Flying the UK flag upside down just makes people think you’re an idiot.)

Yes.

In the upper corner of the flag nearest the flagpole, the wider diagonal white stripe should be above the red diagonal stripe. If the red is above the wider white stripe the flag is upside-down.

tacking unrelated stuff on to bills is not how our system works

Parliament has exclusive cognisance, it works how the members want it to work.

20 years ago, no one owned a smart phone.

The handspring visor, one of the first smartphones, was released in 2000. I owned one, although a few years later and second hand.

It still works too, except the phone part is 1g only, so there’s no network for it any more.

Why are we still relying on manufacturers for software updates?

I know there’s driver issues, but I’m pretty sure google could engineer android to at least allow direct security updates within the same android version. Google play services still provides updates for android 5. Even Yocto linux has opkg for updates.

Capital controls worked, which is why Thatcher abolished them.

Recommendations of what fabrics to wear?

I want to be more respecting of my own sensory needs, and notice certain fabrics are incredible uncomfortable, as opposed to others. I’ve also noticed loose clothing feels more comfortable for me, then tight clothes. Cotton feels good, polyester does not. I understand this may potentially vary for each person, but wanted to...

For me, the fabrics i like are:

  • Wool, especially merino
  • Linen
  • Hemp
  • Raw denim

Cotton I’m kinda neutral on, I dislike polyester and most synthetics.

What band or music group would you not have minded if they didn't have a certain band member?

My pick is Five Finger Death Punch and the obvious answer is Ivan Moody. The guy radiates that alpha-male wannabe energy and it definitely rings through all of the songs he has written and performed with this band. The guy is just a prick and a self-victimizing asshole....

Sony didn’t care about consent when they put rootkits on millions of CDs.

It doesn’t say what license they are going to use, so it may not be open source. The wording is very weaselly.

Server as heating device - how do I do this?

So I have this silly idea/longterm project of wanting to run a server on renewables on my farm. And I would like to reuse the heat generated by the server, for example to heat a grow room, or simply my house. How much heat does a server produce, and where would you consider it best applied? Has anyone built such a thing?

RobotToaster,
@RobotToaster@mander.xyz avatar

Computers are just heaters that do maths as a side effect, so it makes sense. There’s even a company monetising the idea for ESG credits

Two issues i can see are

  • Humidity in a grow room will be bad for a computer
  • With modern computers the heat output will in part depend on the workload, so you will need to find a way to make the computer do more work when you want more heat.
