Community Opinion Poll (READ DISCLAIMER)

We have been approached by multiple users asking us to hard-fork to focus on fixing code quality, we have always rejected such proposals as we intend to stay a soft-fork but we should at least ask the community as a whole what they want, as we are a community project

(DISCLAIMER: voting in this poll will not result in this action actually being taken by the the project. this poll is only for collecting the public opinion of the topic)

Sharkey,

@neia We already collaborate with Misskey sometimes, but there also sometimes is a conflict of interest.

Sharkey,

@dalekcoffee the poll is just for collecting general opinion and won't result in any action being taken

We have just released version 2024.3.3 we recommend updating sharkey as it includes a security fix

changes of the update:

  • a security fix for a defect in the validation of JSON-LD signatures that could lead to account takeover
  • non-ascii characters are now allowed in custom emoji names (please don't go too wild, other instances may not recognise the names)
  • UI language is now saved and restored in "preferences backup"
  • embedding a CW-ed note on other sites now only shows the CW, not the whole note
  • various imports, and the generation of movie thumbnails, are once again working
  • ranged requests to proxied files are now correctly handled (should improve video playback on iOS)
  • the modtracker player is now loaded on-demand, so the frontend loads faster
  • floating UI windows now render custom emojis in the titlebar
  • the "word mute" feature now includes poll choices and image alt-texts
  • custom emoji should look better in admin panel
  • un-pinning emojis from the selector pop-up works better
  • editing a note to add/remove an attachment, or the edit alt-text, works properly now
  • instance description and server rules can now contain more HTML (images, centered text, details/summary, styled links)
  • clearing cached files from drive should be more reliable
  • all paginated views (e.g. timelines, various admin pages) should be more stable and not randomly drop items

@Sharkey Quick question. Was playing around with Sharkey and docker compose and ran into some issues (the files seems identical on misskey).

Where would be a decent “forum” to ask questions and such? No promises but it might turn into PRs as well. Would love to get the helm charts up to speed too.

(Realized I have zero open source presence, and could dearly use one. So that’s where this comes from:) Would love to get some PRs in. 25 years in the software game now, so it’s about time.)

Sharkey,

@yon You could join our discord and talk with us there other than that we also have an IRC channel

Sharkey,

@yon the discord is linked in the profile field of this account :3

1st, when you asked for money for your server, you made it clear that your Join Sharkey dot Org site would be online. You continued that statement before asking for money, during asking for money, and after asking for money. It is NOT online.

We never promised anything for reaching the funding goal apart form moving to our own hardware and things running better, we have always clarified that we lack the dev work to make a new page and that this will be done sometime in the future, and no a simple HTML page won't cut it but even that would need time better spent on something else.

as for redirecting to a 3rd party (for finding an instance) we already did that before the migration and do it again now on the docs page> 2nd, yes, people understood you would also be hosting your private Fediverse instance, too. We understood that and liked the idea. I think it is great, that you're running a Fedi dedicated to LGBTQ+ and their allies, for everyone to freely join. But we also were still waiting for the Sharkey development to be included onto that server, which it is not.

Sharkey is already running on the new servers that includes Shonk.social , the sharkey gitlab "activitypub.software" and other services needed for the project, that means the goal of using it for sharkey is already more than fullfilled and the servers are indeed being used for sharkey development> 3rd, no one said or suggest that you were ONLY playing Minecraft. Only that it seems like you're using the server for everything BUT what you said you would.

Again the server is being used to host all Sharkey related services needed for operation (a website is marketing and not needed for operation, tho it can be said that it being errored was bad which we have fixed and made it redirect to the docs and fixed any mentions in the docs) and so the servers are used for what we said we would aka TransFem.org and by extension Sharkey> 4th, the documentation, the simple Wiki, takes all of 10 seconds to fix the URLs, which you STILL have not done. So I find the documentation, and it still does not point to how to Join Sharkey. Even now, after you wrote this. Do you think you can do that?

all mentions have already been removed from the docs and the main page redirects to the documentation, you might have a cached version of the page with old links

Clarification on some discourse being brought up

  1. Why is the joinsharkey.org site not available

A: the site was very buggy and wasn't of much help and we currently don't have the resources (as in developers) to work on a new one, as we like to focus on Sharkey itself not marketing, we have started redirecting the domain to the documentation and have fixed any links in the docs.

  1. Sharkey funding for server hosting issues is used to run a minecraft server

A: We did have hosting issues but those were not responsible for the website being down. Sharkey is a project of TransFem.org, that means it runs on the same servers as TransFem.org, we did have a funding campaign for collecting funds to use for hosting TransFem.org this was reposted on the Sharkey account as Sharkey is a part of TransFem.org, it was also stated that said money would be used for hosting TransFem.org and it was never said it would solely be used for Sharkey, with that said yes there is a Minecraft server running on the same servers as Sharkey is, that being the TransFem.org servers which said Minecraft server is for. just like the TransFem.social fedi instance that runs on the same servers because its part of TransFem.org

  1. The lead is just playing minecraft instead of working on the project

A: this is partially false, the project lead isn't much involved in actual development and more in sysadmin and management and has recently taken a bit of a break for mental health reasons and started playing on the modded minecraft server, that said they are still helping out when they are needed and this has no effect on Sharkey whatsoever

please keep in mind we are just a bunch of hobbyists working on this software, we do this for free, in our own time, the money we make with donations goes to hosting costs of the entire TransFem.org

rebeccasaurus, to fediverse

What are the odds there’s someone with some knowledge of *Key away and aware right now?

My problem, images I’ve uploaded don’t load. So right now, one of my test uploads is this: https://theshark-smellslike.sparklef.art/shonk.se-sto-1.linodeobjects.com/sharkey/b8c8a267-3798-4294-8aeb-7d19e52fbf99.webp That’s the URL the pages tries to GET. It doesn’t work. If you copy the everything after “.art/“ and paste that in the browser, the image is clear as day.. (I’ve manually set it’s access to public to test)

What/where is this going wrong?!

Sharkey,

@rebeccasaurus i recommend you join our support discord or irc this seems to be misconfigured S3 settings

So....I want to migrate from Mastodon to Sharkey. The catch is, I would LIKE to end up back on my current domain....is this possible at all?

I have a domain I could park a Sharkey instance to migrate to, but if I make a new Sharkey instance on my current domain after I shut the Mastodon instance down, will I be able to migrate back with little issue?🤔

#Fediverse #Mastodon #MastoAdmin #FediAdmin #Sharkey #SharkeyAdmin

Sharkey,

@BeAware its recommended to use a new domain or subdomain but it's possible to reuse a domain after it's been without an instance for a while

Sharkey,

@BeAware if something happens to sk we would publish changes and a guide for migrating to mk

Sharkey,

@BeAware instances tend to drop keys after a while also u could use your main domain if you already redirected it

Not so Fun Fact said security issue is also affecting misskey

⚠️IMPORTANT SECURITY UPDATE, PLEASE BOOST THIS POST⚠️

Please update your Sharkey to version 2024.3.2, there has been some security fixes to ensure validation of remote users and activities

this is a minor release mostly just for the security fixes

changes of this release:

  • prohibited words are now correctly checked when creating notes
  • notes with CW are no longer shown on the welcome page for non-logged-in users
  • database migrations should no longer timeout
  • docker image improvements
  • important security fixes

Important Note for Users that do NOT use S3 and that USE Docker

There have been some improvements made to the Docker images that should fix some issues with that the container now runs as a seperate Sharkey user with id 991:991 so its required to change ownership of the files directory to do that run the following in the directory where your docker-compose.yml file is

# replace web with what ever you named the sharkey service if you changed the default docker compose file
docker compose exec --user=root web chown -R sharkey:sharkey /sharkey/files

Important Note for everyone
please update immediately there is a scheduled downtime on April 6th during that time the Sharkey docker images and repo might be unavailable for more than 2 hours

Sharkey,

@imikoy Thanks, im very dyslexic and didn't notice the typo, i have edited the post

Sharkey,

@graphite use 991:991 in the chown command instead then

kopper, to random

chat this new sharkey update looks a bit weird

(unsure if i want to commit to the migration yet so this is not yet in production)

RE: brain.d.on-t.work/notes/9qe1t87z1n1w03gm

Sharkey,

@kopper Do you still have the SQL for this? so we can maybe add a guide for Sharkey->IceShrimp migration for people that want it?
