“This isn’t an argument for trickle-down economics — we don’t need to put more money in the pockets of the wealthy. But the money they have is better spent in the economy than hoarded in the market.”

"So what is it? It is a reuse error. The SRI horizontal bias module was reused from a 10-year-old software, the software from Ariane 4.

(…) It is a reuse specification error.

The truly unacceptable part is the absence of any kind of precise specification associated with a reusable module.

The requirement that the horizontal bias should fit on 16 bits was in fact stated in an obscure part of a document. But in the code itself it was nowhere to be found!"

"The GMP server has been under serious load due to a barrage of clone requests from Github. Its setup encourages "forks" of their projects, which by default pull in parent project changes. Around 2023-06-15, a project known as FFmpeg decided that it would be a great idea to clone GMP in their CI scripts, meaning that every one of their commits requested a compressed clone from the GMP servers. (…)

In effect, Microsoft's cloud performed a DDoS attack on the GMP servers."

I just stumbled upon some old blog post of mine, and those screenshots of Mac OS X of yore make me nostalgic. The depth. The vibrant colors. The strong contrast. The clarity. Le sigh.

I'm always amazed by the lengths people will go to avoid writing a single SQL query, instead using hilariously complex ORMs that will, eventually, have performance issues of their own, not to mention the horrendous APIs (and documentations thereof) they have to put up with.

BUT BUT BUT PORTABILITY

Portability? In 27 years, I've seldom seen apps switching databases. Actually, I've seen more apps being rewritten from scratch, which might or might not include a change in the underlying RDBMS.

I understand where acronyms like "BENELUX" and "EMEA" come from, but following that line of reasoning, shouldn't "DACH" be "DÖCH" or even "DÖS" or "GAS" instead?

My AI-generated text detector consists of a simple, efficient, cross-platform, extremely fast filter, and here's a version in curly-bracket-pseudocode so you can adapt it to your own infrastructure, no matter which tech stack you use:

if (text.startsWith("In the ever-evolving landscape of…")) {
 print("AI-regurgitated crap");
 exit(1);
}

You're welcome.

"Tax policy groups have been lobbying to close this loophole for years, and Congress nearly did it in 2022, but Senator Kyrsten Sinema took $2 million from the private equity industry (aka Owners) and saved their $14 billion loophole. It’s well known that our leaders are whores. What’s more surprising, and disappointing, is what cheap whores they are ($2 million for $14 billion)."
