I’ve not used Facebook Marketplace in 5 years!

5 years ago I used it to sell my used iPad Pro.

Yesterday I decided to use it again to sell my used iPad Pro (I just upgraded to M4).

Anyway, today I open up my email, and first thing in my inbox is an email with the article titled “Is Marketplace the least evil part of Facebook?”

I don’t know the answer to that, but is that not a weird sequence of coincidences?

(I wouldn't test this on people who eat British food, but I accept the challenge)

“A recent study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science explores how individuals assess the plausibility of conspiracy theories. The research reveals that a suspicious mindset is strongly linked to perceiving implausible conspiracy theories as plausible, while cognitive skills and rational thinking dispositions are negatively associated with finding such theories credible.”

I'm not sure we needed a study but ok …

Downsides of open source software (OSS):

– Many factions—e.g. many Linux distributions & desktops. Because OSS attracts people that want to write their own software so that it exactly matches their needs(?)

– UIs seem often less polished. Because OSS has more programmers than UI designers(?)

Other than that: It’s ironic how much open source helps companies—especially small ones. IIRC, the first internet boom would not have been possible without open source projects such as Apache.

@rauschma polished UI has more programmers than designers, difference is they follow a process that OSS won't tolerate (starting with product management)

assaf,
@assaf@mas.to avatar

@rauschma by volume of users it already does because the majority of OSS comes from companies (eg iPhone/Mac both use Darwin)

by attention span it doesn't and it never will because of the principle"free as in free of any project manager involvement” and (like it or not) that's never going to change

Weekend Reading — Objection-oriented programming

https://labnotes.org/weekend-reading-objection-oriented-programming/

This week we find a power-up box, replace GitHub Actions with Maven XMLs, avoid the worst website in the world, revisit RTO policies, “listen” to OpenAI employees, watch our Slack private messages, do laundry for free, and fall asleep to a YouTube video.
