US thwarts plot to kill Sikh separatist and issues diplomatic warning to India (www.theguardian.com)

US authorities have thwarted a plot to kill a Sikh separatist in the United States and issued a warning to India over concerns the government in New Delhi was involved, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources....

It’s odd to say that Engoron is afraid to rule against Trump when he already ruled he’s guilty of fraud. I’d also love to see him fined a billion dollars or to spend time in jail for contempt of court but Trump and his team are baiting him to take more extreme action to argue bias on appeal. Keeping his orders beyond reasonable is probably the right move to protect his verdict moving forward. Same goes for Chutkin. She’s probably more reluctant to help Trump open a door to appeal than afraid to have him spend a night in jail or whatever.

The reason why legal commentators are saying this isn’t a victory for Trump is because, at this level, the finding of fact is what matters most. Appellate courts almost never rule against lower court’s judgment of fact. If she had ruled that the 14th amendment applied and Trump had to be removed from the ballot, we’d be in about the same position. The appellate court would’ve stayed her ruling pending the appeal. The only real difference is that people would be happier about it. But they’d be happy without a good reason because appellate courts always disregard lower court rulings on matters of law. Her ruling on the applicability of the 14th amendment just doesn’t matter much.

I feel like we should’ve known since Russia has always waged war like this. It is shocking they’re still doing it though!

breakfastmtn,
@breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca avatar

The US just doesn’t have an artillery-centered military like Russia and Ukraine though. It’s very unlikely they’d be in a war like this. It makes me wonder if the headline is overstating things and that ramping up production is primarily about topping up allies. Another interesting thing about this war is that air denial has been more significant than air superiority. Russia should (on paper at least) have been able to establish air superiority and they just haven’t been able to at any point. I’m curious how much that is seen as a new reality of warfare and whether this represents a slight change in US strategy, which is focused so heavily on air power and air superiority.

FF is great for mobile with the exception of PWAs. They abandoned support for web apps - they work but performance is terrible. It’s a massively requested feature so hopefully they’ll add support soon. I use a chromium browser (Vanadium) for web apps but have links open in FF.

Might be a good time to dip a toe in the waters over at Pixelfed, if you haven’t already.

It would vary by server, but pixelfed.social and pixelfed.art just require sexually explicit or violent images to be marked sensitive.

Edit: I think sensitive images or specific tags might not appear on the daily trending list though. For a while it was just a wall of dicks and now it’s not. But those posts wouldn’t be deleted and people wouldn’t be prevented from seeing or boosting them either.

Lieutenant General Vladimir Sviridov, 68, and his wife Tatyana, 72, were found dead on Wednesday in their bedroom, said the Kyiv Post. They looked to have been dead for about a week before their discovery, according to the newspaper.

That’s not what the ruling says. She ruled that he did engage in an insurrection as a matter of fact but that the 14th amendment doesn’t apply to him as a matter of law because the president isn’t an officer of the United States.

breakfastmtn,
@breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca avatar

People are really upset about it but it’s a bit more boring than people think.

She ruled as a matter of fact that he engaged in an insurrection but basically just punted the issue of applicability of the 14th amendment to the appellate court. It was a pretty timid ruiling but this wasn’t going to be decided in her court either way. Even if she ordered him removed from the ballot, her order would’ve been stayed by the appellate court anyway.

breakfastmtn,
@breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca avatar

Oblig: IANAL.

The appellate court will rule on both, I believe. From analysis I’ve read (Teri Kanefield’s threads on Mastodon have been great), it’s highly unlikely that they’d overturn her establishment of fact (ie. her ruling on the insurrection).

OC "A Billion Nazis at the Table" - The Fediverse model proves contextual moderation by real humans is both easy and affordable. The presence of Nazis on corporate social media implies at least a tacit acceptance. (www.staygrounded.online)

"If you’ve ever hosted a potluck and none of the guests were spouting antisemitic and/or authoritarian talking points, congratulations! You’ve achieved what some of the most valuable companies in the world claim is impossible."

It’s not like they’re like, “yay Nazis!”, but their business model necessitates being extremely permissive. More eyeballs means more money.

Fediverse admins and mods don’t have any other goal beyond protecting their communities. It’s why corporate social, even before Elon took over Twitter, was crawling with suit Nazi alt-right accounts dog whistling their Nazi bullshit. Also why Eugen Rochko could famously say “that bullshit doesn’t work on me man” when offered a typical argument justifying the existence of those accounts.

More people here may draw more attention from Nazis, but it wouldn’t change the interests of admins/mods. More eyeballs doesn’t mean more money here. And shitty users means both unhappy communities and much more work for mods. There’s just no incentive to put up with it.

This might seem like splitting hairs but he didn’t openly advocate propping up Hamas to weaken the PA and discredit the idea of a Palestinian state. He’s reported to have said that specifically during a private party meeting. To anyone who’s paid attention to his revolting policies, I don’t think it was surprising to learn but he’s never publicly said anything like that. It’s not like he campaigned on it.

breakfastmtn,
@breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca avatar

To be fair, the HM has said it’s a regular hospital shift calendar but hasn’t been able to explain why it starts on 10/7 and is titled with Hamas’ name for the attack. And it’s kind of hard to think of a valid reason, especially when considering all the other evidence along with it.

For real, this article is just ‘someone on a podcast said…’

This NY court doesn’t have jurisdiction over his Florida property. It’s like if there’s a massive fine and if he can’t pay it some other way then he might have to sell Mar-a-Lago to pay it.

Don’t get me wrong, I hope the trial ruins him and his turd kids, but that’s a lot of ifs and a weird thing to write an article about.

This is nothing like Clinton. Biden already won and any other candidate would need insanely good numbers to overcome the power of incumbency. Obama had an approval rating of 38% (lower than Biden now) a year before the 2012 election and still easily won the election (332-206).

Whatever your opinion of Biden, the Democrats would be very dumb to run another candidate.

breakfastmtn,
@breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca avatar

I think the worry is that because of the scale of war the UN likely won’t be able to check their work this time and that their claimed casualties in the al-Ahli Arab Hospital explosion are around 4 times higher than most other credible estimates. And those were revised down from an initial estimate that was about twice as high as that. It doesn’t take much to lose credibility.

On the other hand, it’s not like there’s anyone else reporting. If you’re basing the estimate on historical data, I guess the safest assumption for now is that those numbers are high but not that high. And that about a third of those reported deaths are Hamas fighters (the HM doesn’t distinguish between combatants and civilians). I wouldn’t be surprised if that doesn’t hold though. It’s a way higher intensity attack from Israel and also a much more existential fight for Hamas.

I don’t think there’s a “they” here. He was universally condemned for the remarks and kicked out of government . But, yeah, this dude’s a real piece of shit for sure.
