Blogged: View transitions: an obligatory “am I missing something?” post ✍️ To be honest, I’m a bit underwhelmed by the prospect of smooth between-web-page transitions coming to browsers soon. But that could just be me missing the point.
@leonp I think the best argument I've heard is that PWAs can feel more like native apps with these kinds of transitions. It's definitely polish over some other enhancements that would be nice to have, but it'll blur the line between native apps and web apps just a little bit more.
@leonp in theory. Since the web platform is getting better, it'll be more efficient for small teams to put out an installable native-feeling PWA over building for iOS and Android specifically.
I'm sure some people will put it on blogs just because. I could see it working well for portfolios or showcase sites.
@leonp I prefer MPAs because I think they're easier to manage and libraries like #htmx give a super-nice interaction layer. I built an app for work using Svelte and ended up converting it back to an MPA in the end. I think there are use cases, just not for most things.
@leonp The most compelling reason for SPAs I've come across is for continual playback. Elements can stay on the page while navigating around which wasn't possible before.
@tcely I'm on a second trip through the books right now, listening this time. I restarted the store after finishing book 2. There's a lot changed between the two, but the changes work.
I changed my desk setup at work, which includes a new keyboard, so today is an exercise in typing a bunch and then spending more time going back and fixing spelling mistakes.
I think I'm going to repurpose my #raspi which is currently running as a little-used home server, into a retro gaming interface. My kids are old enough now to start and I think it would be fun to have available.
RetroPie is the big name. I used Lakka in the past. Batocera is new and looks good.
Any recommendations on what to use? It's a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.
