I think we can safely say Apple might not be entirely on top of what’s currently great and new in AR.

Version history showing the app was last updated three years ago.

YouTube increasingly feels deranged. I’m trying to watch a video and there’s an ad about every few minutes. I get YouTube is urging people to the paid tier, but honestly this is just starting to wean me off of YouTube entirely. (And the war on blockers means on mobile I can’t turn on something for this video. Nothing I have installed works. Videos now just pinwheel when they hit an ad. If anyone has any advice, I’ll happily receive it. Or I might just download this vid and watch elsewhere.)

UTM SE rejected. From third party app stores. Hmm. First, I imagine the EU won’t look too kindly on this. Secondly, this surely puts paid to iDOS, Mini vMac and others. But it’s also a nonsense, given that Apple has already approved emulators for PCs (ZX81; C64; all the cores in RetroArch) – just not standalone ones for IBM-compatible PCs or anything to do with Apple itself.

Natch, I’m not remotely surprised at any of this mess. It’s so very Apple app review.

We’ve continued no-mow into June. The front garden is full of gigantic daisies, long grasses, buttercups, clovers and more. But no insects. We’ve seen a few bees over the past month. A handful of butterflies. Very little else.

Again, I totally forgot where I hid my backup drives when I went away. But this time I wrote myself a secure note. Thanks, previous me!

More Screen Time fun. The 9yo been hiding her iPhone in her bed. She has a block on Safari, and there’s a ‘whitelist’ of sites she’s allowed to visit. So bit of a surprise this morning to discover she’s already spent two hours on YouTube (in Safari) today.

Doesn’t anyone at Apple test these things?

Also on kids, on Wednesday it was like a switch was flicked. Kid zooms up to her room after dinner. Faff about with comics or on her phone. No more dad time. I knew that was coming at some point but wasn’t expecting it to be so sudden. (And, yes, I’ll invite her to do stuff in evenings as of tomorrow. Hopefully it won’t be the end end just yet!)

I pay £13 ($16) per month for 125GB cellular data, which I can use with tethering. There are similar unlimited deals in the UK. Paying double that for a backup service intended to be used infrequently is… quite something.

Window management on macOS isn’t great and I’ve tried a lot of tiling tools but none are as good as i3. I discovered AeroSpace today from @bobko and using it for a bit, it’s really solid! https://github.com/nikitabobko/AeroSpace — great work!

@film_girl @bobko Have you tried Moom? That’s always my first install on a new Mac. (I’ll take a look at AeroSpace though. Always interested to find new utilities in this, er, space.)

I love my daughter to bits and, yes, it’s “not all boys”. But that she’s having to navigate this kind of shite in primary school just makes me so angry and sad all at once. Fortunately, she’s not put off school and has merrily called the boy an “idiot she’d like to yeet into the sea”. But this kind of thing seems all too common even at this age. “Boys will be boys!” (And I bet if she’d have fought back, she’d have been in way more trouble than the boy.)

School’s response today was to criticise the girls for not telling a teacher right away and then vaguely say that the issue would be dealt with. This after another day of the boy who hit my kid repeatedly calling her and her friend a “ficking bitch”. (He thinks he’s being clever in not swearing, you see…)

Full-on sexism shit for Mini-G at school today. She’s chatting with friends in PE. A boy marches over, demanding attention. Mini-G says her friend was talking and they should let her finish. So he calls her a bitch and hits her. I don’t even. This kid is 10 (and waaay bigger than her). She’s 9. Where the hell is this behaviour learned at that age? Natch, I’ve written to the deputy head and my daughter will be seeing her tomorrow. (This is not the first incident with this boy.)

9yo bursts into the room as I’m playing a loop I made last night.

“WHAT’S THAT TUNE?”

It’s just something I made last night.

“Sounds like something where you add some lyrics and then you’re famous!”

… Thanks kid. I kind of needed that! :D

Me: man, it’d be really good if Ice Cubes let you customise your tabs, so you could have a list readily accessible.

Ice Cubes: have you even looked in my settings?

Catching up with Doctor Who and just watched 73 Yards. I really liked that. But it looks like a lot of people have a real problem with fairy tale logic. For me, it was kind of like something Mignola would write for Hellboy. Not every detail needs explaining. Sometimes it’s better to leave mystery, especially in such a horror-themed episode.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@shaythompson For me, there’s a distinction for his pulling a deus ex machina out of his arse and his broad lack of concern for plot logic, and the kind of episode that was 73 Yards, which worked well within its own set-up and reality. I think had it tried to explain more, it would have failed. But within the framing we got, it worked for me.
