Former Diaspora core team member, I work on various fediverse projects, and also spend my time making music and indie adventure games!

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

Radio Free Fedi is a radio stream featuring only fediverse musicians! (radiofreefedi.net)

I've been listening to this stream on my transit into and out of work for a while now. Some of the music quality varies, but it's a real, sincere effort to promote musicians on the network and it feels in line with Pirate Radio. Lots of great songs, along with some very quirky interludes.

Also worth noting that there's a bot you can follow to see what songs are playing: https://botsin.space/@radiofreefedi

Pretty handy if you liked a track, but just missed what the title was!

Weirdly, VLC on mobile is really good for this!

The sad truth is that Diaspora pretty much refuses to federate with anything other than itself. Some projects have managed to reverse engineer the protocol, but you'd honestly have more luck with Friendica or Hubzilla. Even then, neither of those things are perfectly analogous to Facebook.

In my own experiments with ActivityPub's lesser-known client-to-server protocol, I found that it was possible to author messages that predate whenever a message is posted. Theoretically, this could open the door for importing statuses between Actors.

At the very least, a migrated group would just need to perform an "Announce" activity on the old group's messages to mirror them, up to a point. I'm not saying that it would be ideal if thousands of messages needed to be moved over, but maybe there are smart ways to optimize that that doesn't require thousands of cross-server requests.

Looking back, I always did stupid things as a kid.

This one time, when I was 12, I ran over a hornet's nest with my bicycle. It was in the middle of the road, and I noticed it way too late. The thing cracked open, I realized what was happening, and went full speed downhill.

I decided to do something extra stupid, and stood on the handlebars in an attempt to jump off. The bike flipped, I fell, and my arm dragged all the way down the street before the bike fell on top of me.

In hindsight, there may have been no hornet's nest.

Why can't a messaging app just send messages? Why does it have to include a social network?!

This isn't necessarily a bot in and of itself...but, could function as one. It would be really cool if bots could reshare content from other fediverse sources into a group automatically, but preserve attribution to the original posters.

Would be really handy for, say, automatically sharing PeerTube videos to a community dedicated to watching them.

I tried out Watch Dogs 2 the other day. It was kind of a hassle to set up, thanks to the headache that is Ubisoft Connect.

Performance-wise, I was a bit disappointed. Most options allowed me to squeeze out an acceptable 40FPS at 40Hz, but like...this is not exactly a new game. It just feels like the devs didn't do a great job at optimizing it.

I really wish I could do this. Sadly, I'm not sure I have enough leadership expertise, and I'm currently on a contract for another year and a half.

But goodness, it could be fun!

One thing that I'm curious about with SocialHub: would it benefit more from itself being a federated communications hub? Would SocialHub benefit from migrating to Lemmy, so that we can all contribute to conversations there from our respective spaces on the fediverse?

Really excited about this; the dev has been doing a great job.

Seems to work just fine!

You know, every time I’ve tried to take a look at Solid’s protocol, I find myself struggling to understand what they’re actually trying to do, or how any of it is supposed to work.

I’ve tried to read the protocol spec several times, and my brain just kind of melts. From their About page for the Solid project, I kind of get what they’re talking about, but so much of the under-the-hood stuff feels really vague.

I’m not against making a fediverse platform support Solid, if only to support the core concepts its promoting, but I feel like they have a lot of work to do to make their own project more accessible to people.

I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing to have some platforms be specialized around really particular kinds of activities, but I have like 7 different accounts floating around. It’s tiring. I’d really just prefer a good generalist platform and a handful of different apps that all hook into the same account.

That being said, I don’t mind the concept of following someone’s Pixelfed to see their neat photography pics, or another person’s PeerTube to watch their videos. In fact, if my hypothetical server can interoperate with them without any major issues, I’d consider that a win for me.
