Do you think we will ever have affordable housing again in our lifetime?

Considering how crazy expensive accommodations have become the last couple of years, concentrated in the hands of greedy corporations, landlords and how little politicians seem to care about this problem, do you think we will ever experience a real estate market crash that would bring those exorbitant prices back to Earth?

filister,

Sorry to disappoint you, but you are also part of the problem. Some food for thoughts: archdaily.com/…/is-airbnb-contributing-to-the-hou…

filister,

Check Germany, only 49.5% own their houses and the situation is getting steadily worse.

It is getting ridiculously expensive and the majority of the people cannot afford getting a mortgage. In Munich the average sq.m. is between 8 and 15K while the average salary is 3K and the rent for 70sq.m. flat is 1.500€.

filister,

You do realize that there are other ways to invest, bonds, shares, ETFs, etc.

In my opinion if you earn average or above average for the city you live in you should be able to afford a roof over your head easily which is not anymore the case for a lot of places.

filister,

People are spending a considerable amount of their pay on just putting a roof over their heads, be it a rent or a mortgage payment. Plus in the last decades we have had a much bigger GDP per capita increase than salary increase, in fact salaries are hardly keeping up with the official inflation.

Greedy corporations are promoting the subscription culture, meaning that people have even less disposable income.

The point is that politics are currently serving the interests of multi billion dollar corporations and there is no political will to change the status quo.

filister,

What DE are you using? As very little provide vertical bars and for my UWQHD that would be good.

filister,

But Tailscale is Wireguard under the hood.

filister,

Because the possibility of being somewhere without my phone is a lot lower compared to being without my Yubikey.

zsh or fish for an intermediate Linux user?

So I’ve been using Linux now for a while, and am looking to migrate my dev environment to vim and spend more time in the command line. I’m fairly comfortable with bash but by no means an expert. I’ve used zsh with some minor customization but just recently learned about fish. I’d love to hear people’s opinions.

filister,

Depending on your use case. I personally use zsh and oh-my-zsh but you can always customize bash to be more like zsh, have auto completion, etc.

filister,

Something like this and keep in mind that pretty much everything can be found second hand for a lot lower price and I don’t see a reason why not buy it second hand. Only buy the SSD and the PSU new. And this is just an exemplary build, no need to buy everything. Personally I would go with a 1440p monitor anytime.

NVIDIA GeForce vs. AMD Radeon Linux Gaming Performance For August 2023 (www.phoronix.com)

In the end the new GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card ended out just slightly above the Radeon RX 7600 in terms of overall performance. The Radeon RX 6000/7000 series on their open-source Linux GPU driver stack continue to perform very competitively with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30/40 series and their respective proprietary driver...

filister,

Seriously they should have selected more GPU demanding games.

filister,

Try with dig to check what DNS you are using. And check if you have support for both IPv4 and IPv6.

filister,

Isn’t it normal to have between 15-20km/KWh, that’s 4-5 times less efficient. Our car obsession is showing how wasteful we are.

Not to mention that if this tank goes into an accident, the force experienced by the passengers in the other car would be a couple of times higher compared to the force experienced in the passengers of the IQ, practically making this a road kill machine.

filister,

Try Dinkum, it’s like a mixture between Animal’s crossing and Srardew Valley and a very chill and relaxed game. There are a bunch of levels for pretty much every one of your skills and it takes a while to progress into the game.

Looking for a decent privacy-respecting search engine

Been using SearXNG for about a year now, and I just can’t deal with instances constantly getting blocked by search engines anymore. So I’d like to find something a bit more reliable. I’ve read that DuckDuckGo has had some controversies in the past, and I wouldn’t touch Brave with a 39 and a half foot pole.

filister,

The question is are they going to track us and sell our data to third parties if we use Sync for Lemmy?

filister,

Why don’t you migrate to cheaper providers like Hetzner? I mean AWS is extremely expensive for what they are and I am pretty sure there are hundreds of people out here who will willingly help you set it up.

filister,

And still 220K sounds awfully affordable. Here where I live 80-90sq.m. flats cost 1M and the average salary is 3K and the average 3 room flat rent 1.5-1.7K

filister,

Long ago I posted on Reddit that publicly traded companies are the plague for our society as they are pushing to the eternal growth at the expense of their users.

I do agree that privately held companies are also looking for profit but the difference is that they are not subject to the immense pressure to exponentially grow.

And now the Reddit IPO comes to prove just that. I am fairly confident that if not for this IPO Reddit wouldn’t try so hard to push those changes and would still thrive.

But at the end of the day, I am happy that it helped me to discover Lemmy and this debacle is why I am here and not there.

filister,

I am using Aegis (free and OpenSource) on Android and I am pretty happy with it, but they don’t have iOS version.

filister,

And if you really like a game, why not supporting their devs
