Window management on macOS isn’t great and I’ve tried a lot of tiling tools but none are as good as i3. I discovered AeroSpace today from @bobko and using it for a bit, it’s really solid! https://github.com/nikitabobko/AeroSpace — great work!

@laen @bobko I haven’t spent a ton of time with this but already it is the closest to i3 I’ve seen and I try a new WM setup almost every 6 months.

This is true for sure — but sometimes you can be prevented by the new owner of what you can disclose. That was my only point last night. We were owed disclosure, but I put that onus primarily on the new owner. It looks now like there is an official statement — better late than never, but like many of you, it has left a bad taste in my mouth for sure. Ice looks promising (hidden bar hasn’t had an update in years so that makes me less comfortable). https://mastodon.social/@lapcatsoftware/112565037324342140

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@lapcatsoftware I think it can be so much more complicated than that. In this case, you’re probably right, but not everyone has the luxury of walking away from a deal because they don’t like some of the terms and so I try to offer grace for that. We were owed being told the app was sold. And most of us will prob rightfully side eye any future apps from this dev (assuming he releases any).

Intrigued by the fact that the Verge story announcing Palmer Luckey’s new Game Boy clone reads very different from the original version, in part because the comments are literally flooded with people attacking the author for giving the console coverage at all.

Props to the commenters for keeping The Verge honest, for sure.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@ernie agreed -- that said, and I'm not defending myself here but it is what it is, I still bought one of these things because it looks really good (and I have two Analogue Pockets) and I've somewhat justified the Palmer Luckey of it all, if only because I have a feeling that these things will probably COST him money rather than help him profit. But that could just be a cope. Regardless, I'm glad the commenters forced more blatant of a discussion in the text of the article.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@ernie totally! And I think most devs will work with playdate over this, if only because playdate is more novel/interesting. Because otherwise you’re just making a gameboy color game right? Which is at least an upside. Every game for this thing should work with an Analogue Pocket or one of the many non-fpga based software emulated handhelds as far as I can tell. The new Tetris is built off GBDK.

Gawker Media LLC -> Gizmodo Media Group -> G/O Media -> / Media? Or maybe they can rename it based on the assets they haven't sold yet where the staff doesn't actively hate management like checks notes Quartz? Should they just rename themselves Quartz but with an asterisk so no one confuses it with the original Quartz?

I’m from Atlanta, so I won’t drink a Pepsi product unless forced. We’re a Coca-Cola family. But Diet Dr. Pepper is the best diet soda that exists. I absolutely drink more Diet Coke ounce for ounce, even tho it is worse, just b/c it’s often on sale more but DP is the real shit. Glad to see it get its due. https://www.wsj.com/business/dr-pepper-soda-sales-92b292c3?st=ty1xr5af1rgj04d&reflink=article_copyURL_share

I’m catching up on my May blog reading that I’d missed during the busyness of the last few weeks and learned that Carbon Copy Cloner, the best Mac app for backing stuff up/cloning drives or volumes or APFS snapshots, just updated to version 7. Insta-upgrade for me! I don’t think every Mac user needs CCC, but if you’re the designated tech support member in your crew, it’s 10000x better than the shitshow that is now Time Machine https://support.bombich.com/hc/en-us/articles/20686482705687-What-s-new-in-CCC-7

We love @b0rk's new git zine so I had to make a little promo graphic for the socials, shamelessly riffing on her great style https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/ https://social.jvns.ca/@b0rk/112536801531164103

I just made a Linux joke without even trying while talking about something entirely different and I have so many questions about my life choices. (The context was that I was informed that the same man is responsible for both unleaded gasoline and cfc based refrigerants, thereby dooming the earth twice, to which I replied, “oh, like how the same guy gave us PulseAudio and systemd?”)

Apparently ICQ is dying in a month. My number was 185645 and that is my ultimate “I was an early adopter as a child” flex for people that are now old. Except for me. Because I will always be 29.

The most me fact is that when I saw “Super Size Me” in the theater, a film I was so excited to see, mind you, we immediately ate McDonald’s after. And it was delicious.

Re: the change in ownership of the Mac app Bartender (see last tweet and also this from MacRumors https://www.macrumors.com/2024/06/04/bartender-mac-app-new-owner/), I want to be clear that I do NOT blame the original owner Ben for selling his app or for choosing to make or not make a statement. A statement would have been great but honestly, he doesn't owe me that. He doesn't owe any of you that either. The new owners, however, do owe their existing and potential new customers a little more transparency than they've offered so far.
