I have an awesome daughter.

Today, during the day, I get a text: "Whatever you do, do NOT come outside. The day star is out here in full force."

She knows I hate that flaming ball of evil. (Necessary for life, but... evil.)

@IzabelaKaramia XD I mean, there was a guy in my old department in Munich (where we're going in a couple of days) who would come around and play the bagpipes. It was weird, but he was pretty good :)

@scheissaufnazis I love playing this particular game on nightmare - it makes you go slowly and savour everything, plus the gameplay is soooo good.

As a urologist, I thought I had heard every genital euphemism there is.

But today, a patient referred to the clitoris as “the little man on the boat“… And I have to say that one was new to me.

Feeling not-great from health stuff, and was flake on doing parking lot Kenpo while younger son was in his MMA lesson.

But then, as he got out of the car, he said, “And it’s a beautiful day for doing katas!”

45 minutes and 22 katas later, damned if he wasn’t right.

@PaladinBard kids are sometimes so awesome like that ❤️

Does the demise of a certain ex-Fox personality mean that Americans can stop using my name in vain?

I have ALWAYS been Tucker. The fact the name seems to be associated with some right wing nut job of late is really upsetting.

@ThetaSigma If only he'd go away - I suspect he won't, not really. :(

@ThetaSigma I'll try to use his last name from now on though ;)

Admittedly, I am skeptical of Bluesky. Mostly because I have seen people like Jack Dorsey churn out reinventions of the wheel time and time again, only resulting in products that are harder to use, more obtuse, combative to poor people, and built with a single point of failure (an oracle or something).

Like, everyone is bullish on this now, but everyone seems to forget that Dorsey owns a crypto exchange. This shit is going to be powered by crypto at some point.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@msprout Given that he announced Bluesky right as Elon took over Twitter, and he more-or-less handed the keys to Twitter to Elon, I am inclined to believe it's just some bullshit intended to make everything worse. It's gonna be a scam, somehow. And besides, why would anyone want it, truly?

Folks, look. I get the Tucker Schadenfreude, but you and I both know it probably wasn't really a firing, he definitely wasn't surprised, he wasn't being punished, and nothing's gonna change. He'll be back on CNN doing some stupid CrossFire style show before you know it.

grrrr_shark,

I mean, enjoy the moment, but don't think this changes a whole lot.

People are always shocked when I say that I am actually a very shy person. Apparently I come across as a bombastic extravert, which always confused me.

grrrr_shark,
@grrrr_shark@supervolcano.angryshark.eu avatar

@msprout I have the same problem - I don't think people understand that shy people develop masks to help them survive in situations where they can't be cautious and watch first, or where we have to interact regardless of how we feel.

They definitely don't understand that some of us don't really like those masks, but we need them (speaking for myself here)

grrrr_shark,

I wish publishers understood how much, especially in a world where we read text constantly and never wind down, book experiences like Amazon provides with Whispersync (I hate Amazon, but this thing is good) are so valuable to many of us, especially as we age and our vision goes, or we have time to kill where we should really relax in a train or doctor's office or on the road.

Moreover, I wish they'd invest more in audiobooks. I wish they'd invest in having a couple of options READ those audiobooks (No, I do not think authors should have to front those costs, and I understand nothing about the publishing industry, so don't bite me).

I know that sounds stupid, but hear me out - a couple of my favourite authors use a reaaaally uninspiring audiobook voiceover for their entire series. But I know people who LOVE that voiceover artist - it's the one I was most referring to when I said something about "American businessman/salesman English". And for one of their books, which became very popular in recent years, another variant was released with a rather British female voice, and I loved it.

But those so much more diversity out there than that, and you could make audiobooks so much better by offering more choices. You'd probably sell more of them, but what do I know... I know it's not a space where there's a lot of money, but let me dream :)

(And please, no more white American businessman voice in the books I love XD)

LB: That said, the dysfunction being instantly visible and instantly interactable DOES make the world more dysfunctional. The feedback loop is friction-free and MUCH faster.

Donald Trump would, for example, been a menace in any world he lived in, but a world with 24/7 media and instant communication has made his star rise faster, harder, and more dangerously. The medium is part of the problem, not just a lens with which we can see it.

I do not truly believe the world isn't more dangerous/dysfunctional. I think PEOPLE have always been this messed up though.
