Honestly, I think the only solution is to require every software engineering professor to take (and pass) an undergrad course in social science research methods, but we both know how likely that is.

sigh trying to use Polars on Apple M2 with Python installed using mamba, I get a crash and a warning message telling me "install a native version of Python that does not run under Rosetta x86-64 emulation" but I can't find instructions on how to do that - any pointers?

Biological features I would like to borrow from other species:

  • Photosynthesis (would make ultralight backpacking way easier if I didn't have to carry food)
  • Gills (swimming, yeah, but also, just more options for breathing)
  • Blood temperature regulation and skin toughness for wider range of comfortable temps
  • Seeing more colors, as shrimp do
  • Elephant-like trunk (for grasping and occasional water fights)
  • Whatever it is that makes tummy rubs and head scratches so dynamite for pet dogs

So many "developers produce more quantities of code with copilot" studies so few "the patterns of interleaving and retrieval change depending on active vs passive consumption of generated solutions and we have like fifty years of research on this in learning science and so maybe we can apply it to make good recommendations about the best usage of generated work output" studies

@sue great. that's just great. I was going to work in the garden today, or maybe go for a nice long bike ride, but instead I'm going to be stuck obsessing over what a "positive linter" would look like and how to build one. You might as well have walked past me humming "Never Gonna Give You Up" so that it's stuck in my head for three days. Again.

If I have several thousand Python files whose docstrings follow several different conventions, is there a tool that will reformat the docstrings into a consistent format? Seems like it ought to be possible to auto-convert (e.g.) Google style to NumPy style or vice versa, but I really don't want to write this myself. Pointers would be very welcome - thank you.

gvwilson,
@gvwilson@mastodon.social avatar

@thatandromeda looks like it'll reformat existing docstrings but not convert one style to another
