Bottle in the form of a shoe, c. 1675 - c. 1700

This item is a cross between a whale and a shoe with a high heel. It is actually a bottle made of leather: the tail is the stopper - so it may have been a showpiece or masterpiece for a cobblers’ guild.

Two armadillos, c. 1550 - c. 1570.

The unknown artist drew a nine-band & a three-band armadillo here.

Armadillos became a symbol of America in the 16th century, often depicted on paper, while dried specimens were collected in cabinets of curiosities.
