After the only hospital in town closed, a North Carolina city directs its ire at politicians (apnews.com)

Weeds have punctured through the vacant parking lot of Martin General Hospital’s emergency room. A makeshift blue tarp covering the hospital’s sign is worn down from flapping in the wind. The hospital doors are locked, many in this county of 22,000 fear permanently....

I would note, this is not just a problem for rural red states.

The only hospital in my home town of Eugene, Oregon has closed. It sat just a few blocks from the University of Oregon campus.

People in need of emergency services need to drive miles to the neighboring town of Springfield, 6 miles away, or Cottage Grove, 23 miles.

Despite polls, Biden aides insist Gaza campus protests will not hurt reelection bid (www.reuters.com)

WASHINGTON, May 18 (Reuters) - Several top White House aides say they are confident protests across U.S. college campuses against Israel’s offensive in Gaza will not translate into significantly fewer votes for Joe Biden in November’s election, despite polls showing many Democrats are deeply unhappy about the president’s...

I think the #1 problem is defining “youth voter” as 18-29.

College age is 18-24, but I don’t see anything looking specifically at that demographic.

For 18-29:

…tufts.edu/…/state-state-youth-voter-turnout-data…

“Nationally, CIRCLE estimates that 23% of eligible young Americans cast a ballot in the 2022 midterm elections.”

Now, problem #1, that’s a mid-term election which always draws lower voter participation.

2nd is looking at 18-29 instead of 18-24.

ny1.com/…/young-americans-harvard-poll-trump-bide…

“The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 54.1% of 18- to 29-year-olds voted in 2020, which had the highest youth turnout overall of any election in the 21st century.”

I had a twitter discussion with another author making the same point… I pointed out that a) she had only written one book, and b) it was categorized under “Young Adult”, not “Fantasy”.

Kind of hard to “get more shelf space” when you only have one book.

In THIS case, the author actually does have a decent collection of books:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fonda_Lee

“She is best known for writing The Green Bone Saga, the first of which, Jade City,[2] won the 2018 World Fantasy Award and was named one of the 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time by Time magazine.[3][4] The Green Bone Saga was also included on NPR’s list, “50 Favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books of the Past Decade”.[5]”

Good question… not sure.

www.avtrinity.com/uk-average-salary

The median average salary for all workers (full-time, part-time, male and female) in the UK in 2023 was £29,669 (£27,756 in 2022 and £25,971 in 2021).

The mean average salary for all workers (full-time, part-time, male and female) in the UK in 2023 was £35,404 (£33,402 in 2022 and £31,447 in 2021).

£29,669 = $37,678.44 USD

I’m getting conflicting info for the US.

This site says $40,480 in the US in 2022.

fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEPAINUSA672N

This site says $74,580.

Aha, I see… PERSONAL income vs. HOUSEHOLD income.

Median home price in the US is $433,588:

Big news, I’m going to pin this one for 24 hours.

In the end, it won’t matter much. I’m not going to go so far as to say the President is a figurehead, but the real power in Iran comes from Ali Khamenei.

Worked under Windows, not an ISP problem.

These are the sorts of things you have to accept as a Linux user and figure out workarounds.

It happens all the time with job search sites and government sites. Happens to Safari users on Mac as well.

Calling another user AT BEST ignorant and at worst a useful moron definitely got your comment removed.

Arguing in bad faith and trolling gets this comment removed.
