What did Nihuang call MCS in this episode? It wasn't gege like she did earlier, but I didn't pick up on what it was.

lirazel,

@geraineon @plalligator That's very interesting. I wonder whether the move from gege to xiongzhang is more about the distance of years or about protecting his cover. I mean, they're alone when she says it, but perhaps she's trying to get used to calling him something that's less suspicious in front of other people?

I think I need to step away from this site. I keep failing to communicate, I keep coming across as judgmental in ways that I don't intend, and it's happened often enough that it's very clearly a problem with me. I don't know how to fix that except to not talk to people online.

I may pop in now and then for Nirvana in Fire watching, but for now, I'm stepping away. I am sorry.

I think my toxic trait is that when I come across a perspective that is super foreign to my own, I want to understand it, so I keep asking questions from different directions hoping it will lead me to understand.

But often...it seems I just fundamentally can't understand and the asking makes people defensive because I come across as attacking their perspective, even though that's the last thing I want to do. So maybe I need to ask less questions?

lirazel,

@geraineon More a general observation about all the times I ask questions about gender or sexuality.

I didn’t mean to assume other people weren’t! It was just a theory based on how many times in my life I didn’t get something and later realized it’s because I was ace and talking to allo people. But the theory was conclusively proved wrong from both directions!

...there's a documentary on Netflix about 4chan....

the world just becomes weirder all the time

lirazel,

@geraineon I've started watching it and it looks like it's the story about how they became radicalized and invented QAnon. Which is a story that needs to be told but I don't know how well this documentary is going to do that.

I have to share a rec because this fic is SO fun!

It subverts the time-travel fix-it fics that are so common in MDZS canon by...being a different kind of time-travel fix-it fic, wherein WWX time travels by accident and then fixes everything...also by accident.

It's delightful and all the characters are so fun and I was just hooting with joy as I read it.

Beloved fandom friend of many years who I lived with for a while but haven't seen in real life for...eight years, maybe? Is currently visiting me and I love it so much!

Lol, thanks Grandma Ursula!

Never get attached to a kpop idol's face. They WILL get a ton of work done and become unrecognizable.

related to asshole characters people love: Oskar von Reuenthal, misogynist playboy, and probably dubcon a woman at best (it depends on your read on it but he did hold her against her will and she tried to kill him and he was also absolutely thinking about his mother issues when he was with her, he is A MESS)

and yet fandom (and me) love him

(in a "please get ruined" way and "he's so pretty" and "wow he's a disaster")

lirazel,

@geraineon Xue Yang is interesting precisely because it's hard to tell whether he knows that he's operating in a different reality than everyone else. Is he aware of how unhinged he seems to everyone else? I am unsure!

lirazel,

@geraineon When you say "asshole" do you mean, "can kind of be a jerk sometimes," or do you mean, "is dangerous to the people around them?"

Because there's a wide range of kinds of assholes!

lirazel,

@geraineon Okay, we'll go with the scary ones.

I will always love Spike from Buffy. Su-min from Marry My Husband is so ridiculously manipulative and selfish that I hate her with all my heart and and I LOVE it. I still haven't read the second book, but Wang Baoxiang from the Radiant Emperor books--weaponized bureaucratic competence! Ko Moon-young from It's Okay Not To Be Okay, my psychopathic princess. Most of the characters from Umbrella Academy are various kinds of assholes, I particularly enjoy Five and Diego and Klaus and Lila.

lirazel,

@geraineon

Also Lynda Day. She doesn't actually ever physically hurt anyone...but I am not sure she wouldn't.

And Alice Morgan, of course.

lirazel,

@geraineon

For lighter characters who are assholes (really most jerks with hearts of gold): Emma Woodhouse, Josh Lyman, Spike Thomson, early days Cordelia Chase.

I know some people think Ezra Klein is way too moderate, and I get that (I am definitely more leftist than he is), but I deeply appreciate how thoughtful he is as an interviewer and how he speaks to so many different kinds of experts from different backgrounds.

So I am trying to give this "how should people actually use AI" episode a fair listen, but it's just pissing me off so much (not what Ezra says, what his guest says). And I genuinely can't decide if I'm being too reactionary against a technology I find gross but that will have useful applications that I need to learn to deal with...or if I am right to be pissed off.

lirazel,

This dude just called AI “a prosthesis for thinking” and it made me want to scream.

And because my mind associates this site with BL discourse, I am now trying to decide which of MXTX's main couples would make the best noir pair.

(Despite me knowing nothing about SVSS)

lirazel,

@geraineon Bleak tone, crime, an aesthetic of smoke and shadows, cynicism, a lack of characters who are "good" people.

A lot of them feature a private investigator or a renegade cop, a lot of them have a femme fatale female lead.

lirazel,

@geraineon Usually there's also an idea of a particular city (frequently L.A.) as a kind of dystopian world of crime through in which no one really has good choices and which our characters are trying to navigate. They seek truth, but truth doesn't give them hope or make the world better.

Well, I officially did not get Job I Want.

So it's back to sending out applications.

A thing that the existence of relative few family names in Korea allows is to have secret family relationships in fiction.

In the English-speaking world, if you have two people, say, in an office who have the same last name, somebody at some point is going to ask if they're related. (Unless they're different races. Though they still might be related.)

But in Korea, everyone expects to be working with multiple people of the same last name, so no one thinks to ask, "Hey, are Yu [Name] and Yu [Name] related?"

Which makes for some very fun reveals!

I KNEW IT!

I love when I'm right about my theories.
