much respect to people who triage crasher reports in widely-used software like browsers. requires an iron belief that things happens for reasons and that you can find them out, all the while knowing the reason might be "the sun is particularly spicy at the moment"

The Google AI isn’t hallucinating about glue in pizza, it’s just over indexing an 11 year old Reddit post by a dude named fucksmith.

@polotek @thisismissem the output (per this video) is a link directly into Wikipedia, so I'm guessing their use of the LLM is with some sort of RAG to pull actual+relevant wikilinks, not hallucinated ones? Would be nice if the plugin had a link to a better explanation and not just YT.

@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@polotek @thisismissem @srishakatux oh, and per the in-plugin docs, I'm guessing they're using the LLM to compare what they're reading on-wiki with what's in your browser, outputting one of these statuses:

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@polotek @thisismissem @srishakatux meh? The UI shows the Wikipedia text they’re comparing against, so not that hard to quickly sanity-check the output (assuming the UI isn’t hiding important details- lots of potentially concerning nuance there).

How would websites look if Google Search vanished overnight?

Along with how relevant your content is, Google also considers headings, subheadings, paragraph lengths, and layout when ranking search results. As a result, websites have gravitated towards a homogeneous, Google-friendly aesthetic. As shown here https://www.theverge.com/c/23998379/google-search-seo-algorithm-webpage-optimization

If SEO no longer mattered, would websites change much? Would we see experiments with site layout, or would sites keep using the layout that has become standard today?

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@docpop @jwz my kingdom for the free time to experiment with any of this. Or maybe I just need to let go and archive all my old stuff other than the top 5-10 posts.

So what SF movies are smart on AI?

Challenge level: nothing where AI is the cliched bad guy (looking at you, Skynet).

I will also accept favorite TV episodes about AI (eg maybe it is time for me to rewatch the Kiksuya episode of Westworld).

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@dcm so what is the best single episode about it? (or, maybe, the most humanizing Borg episode? or episode where the holodeck is most clearly AI?)

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

Already mentioned: Her, Blade Runner (both of them)

Enjoyed but didn't really think it provoked much re "AI": The Creator

Enjoyed but very trope-y about AI, so not on this rewatch list: Ex Machina

Hardly remember, I guess I should rewatch: Spielberg's A.I., Wall-E, Short Circuit

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@shom I haven't rewatched it in a while, and I am not a TV connoisseur by any stretch, but at the time it struck me as one of the greatest TV episodes I've ever seen, in any show, on any topic.

@tartley @shom I doubt it would stand alone, unfortunately—a lot of missing context. The good news is that Westworld season 1 is great and some episodes of S2, especially this one, are also great.

@johnquiggin even a few years ago, the interest in nuclear made some sense, but with the learning/price/deployment curves on wind, solar, and batteries, and the very extended timeline for any nuclear deployment… it’s rare you see such committed sunk cost fallacy.
