Our final resident for the year, Shanice Martin, will be in town with us for the last week of June - and she has a pretty specific research interest that is not the particular specialty of anyone in the lab: subtitling/closed captioning and specifically fansubbing, more specifically early fansubbing.

If anyone has resources they can point us to, or would be willing to talk to Shanice once she is in the lab, please let us know!

so if anyone has a soon to be bricked Spotify Car Thing... we will happily take one to add to our shelf of "hardware that would continue to work just fine if it weren't for capitalism being capitalism" (we're still working on the name)

edit: thanks to @dgfitch and @Mabande for getting us to Corporolized Hardware, as in "enshittification in it's final stage a fossilized piece of corporate shit"
feels like we should tag @pluralistic in on this one 🌈

This month's book is Lurking by Joanne McNeill @jomc - as always, share your responses to the book as you read along here or on the othernetworks.net bookclub post! We'll also be trying out a live chat at some point this month, so keep an eye out for that.

hey, it's May day and while we're not yet in a mayday situation, we are asking for your help.

As you may know, MAL is part of the University of Colorado but generally a lot of our funding has come from external donors, and that has contributed to our ability to operate with a little more freedom, do weirder things, be more open and accessible to the general public than most university stuff. but, as these things go, a lot of those donors are shifting their priorities or scaling back.

we want to be able to continue being a resource in the way we have become accustomed to - maintaining our collection in working order as much as possible, offering these tools to artists and scholars and students and the general public, and doing our level best to be as weird as possible about it.

so, while we're looking at grants and other funding modes that we can shift to, we are also asking you all: does your workplace have a philanthropic fund? do you or someone you know have the means to make recurring donations? please consider asking them to contribute to our support fund, or doing so yourself:

This is @shimmeringtrashpile here! I just wrapped my residency at the MAL! The VideoNow Color FX (Hasbro, 2004) is the third in my UV Portraits at the Media Archeology Lab. I thought I'd share.

we are so sad to see Rob @shimmeringtrashpile conclude his residency in the lab!

we had an excellent workshop last night, talking through what it means to have the minimum supplies necessary to carry out your art practice on-the-go with you any time in a creativity survival kit. a little clip from the stream if you want to check it out: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2129527635

Greetings all! @shimmeringtrashpile here in residence at the MAL! This is my third "UV portrait" of the lab's objects that look fetching under UV light. Here's the lab's collection of Wired magazines!

Greetings all! @shimmeringtrashpile here in residence at the insistently and consistently astounding MAL. I've been taking a few photos I'm calling "UV portraits" of objects that look fetching under UV light. Here's the second in the series, the Radio Shack Monkey See in the style of the Little Professor by Texas Instruments.

If you're in town, I'll be doing a workshop here at the MAL on Thurs, April 25th, at 3PM. Come on by!

(Also, I'm on the road with the underground station @KDZU if you'd like to follow our adventures!)

Join us Thursday, April 25th, 3-4 PM, for Build Your Own Creative Person’s Survival Kit! (and Other Strategies for People Insistent on Waking Up Tomorrow and Trying to Do Something Interesting)! A workshop by Rob Ray @shimmeringtrashpile.

You might be asking, "What the heck is a... Creative Person’s Survival Kit?" Imagine you're traveling to visit family you’re ambivalent about. Or, perhaps you are headed out on a work trip where you'll be stuck in a lousy airport Radisson. We all have scenarios in our lives where we feel forced to put our inspirations on hold, wait for the Zero-Creativity Storm to blow over, and then hope we can rekindle our making and doing once we're back. But if you have a few objects and strategies on hand to energize and facilitate your improvisational creativities, you can reclaim your artistic agency and maybe even make something inspired and rewarding! In the workshop, we'll share how we stay motivated and help one other concoct our very own bespoke and portable Creative Person’s Survival Kit, a small bundle of things that help us stay creative no matter how bleak our surroundings may seem.

Rob Ray is an artist and Associate Professor of Design at CSU, San Bernardino, currently researching site-specific mixed-reality and experimental documentary storytelling.

We are a very open space, welcoming any and all, and that is almost always positive... but sometimes it means things wander away or get put back in odd locations.

In this case, our copy of The First Artificial Intelligence Coloring Book has gone missing... if you remember seeing it in the lab in a strange place that we might not think to look, please let us know?

This month's book is The Modem World (https://modem.world/) by @kdriscoll

We'd love to hear your thoughts on the book, but we also thought up some prompts that are broadly related:

What were your early (possibly pre-internet) social media experiences like?

How have those experiences framed your interaction with social media now?

What do you wish had been carried over to the contemporary internet?
