I discovered when I graduated from Computer Science I prefer people to programming. I toot about Privacy and about how RFC1984 relates to that. I'm concerned by the threat of mass data collection and surveillance. I like to raise awareness of this RFC: https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

I find the commentary about having no control over post deletions on Activity Pub interesting.

Proprietary social networks in particular Tumblr also had posts that continued being shared on that network long after an account was deleted.

We had no way of examining why those posts survived.

At least with Open Source code, we can look at why, we can figure out how to fix it, or why we can't.

I am suspicious of another centralised social network , that wants to do its own thing.

When trying to deal with the dragons of the social Web I'm reminded of this:

https://xkcd.com/743/

Dragons requiring you to sign an NDA for discussions about apps accessing an open social network should not be trusted.

Sometimes I feel the arguments against UBI are a little like the arguments against the babybox (Finland and Scotland).

As "but you need others social support , otherwise it's just the money, the rest of capitalism stays in".

The baby box in Scotland did come with some social support as in Health Visitors during pregnancy and also after. It wasn't just bulk buying baby stuff.

But people got all riled up about well off folks getting a baby box. They realised it was an idea I'd an equal start.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw Yes this. So much this.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw

Exactly. So much of what we end up doing, isn't what would be better for ourselves, our families or our projects.

http://onepict.com/20240409-sustain.html

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw I think at the back of some folks minds, it's the idea of giving people free support when they had none.

Which isn't true, no one is truly self made, as you point out we have support networks.

Which to me is mean spirited. In the case of the baby box in Scotland we had England commentators, buying baby boxes, decrying them as rubbish and burning them.

For some, having someone economically below them is the point. How do they know they've won at society otherwise?

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw interesting Finland was one of the places mentioned in the study, as it had very strong social welfare in place.

The UBI focus there was to replace the social welfare programmes. So it's interesting some see UBI as a replacement for that. Ignoring the idea of social welfare not just being benefits.

If people think of UBI that way, of course it would make people worse off. But it depends I suppose on what people think welfare is.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw Reform is needed at many levels. We're talking about changing society .

Like I grew up in a severely butchered welfare state in the UK under Thatcher.

But Welfare in the US is a different thing.🤔

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw of course Rich People getting it doesnt trouble me either, If they felt bad they could always give that money to other people or public libraries, or like public parks

You know if Philanthropy works that well....

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw Exactly, more investment in social support rather than asking the police to do it.

When the police are involved you've already failed folks needing support several times over.

It doesn't take much to lose your support networks and need help.

But we were all conditioned under Thatcher and others to strive individually, rather than work together.

This is how you ended up with folks supporting austerity and allowing it to kill people.

Back in August 1996 @ietf
thought incredibly carefully about cryptography and the internet.

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1984

Even back then governments were trying to interfere with the internet with weak cryptography. I love the RFC number. Read each point. It's still very relevant all these years later.

In this 5th year of the Pandemic, I'm kinda gut punched by the abandonment of friends, some family and my peers.

I get punched again each time I see an event CFP shared with no health policy.

I recommend reading this piece by @MediaActivist . It's a very long, comprehensive read.

You aren't alone. This isn't your fault. Our society as it is set this up. It's just more of us are on the sharp edges of it. We're the canaries in the coalmine.

It isn't just the sick who get excluded, it's their family who care for them.

It's our overloaded health services.

Who don't you see anymore at events?

Or did you just forget us in the excitement of attending and getting your presentation accepted?

Is it just too inconvenient to practice and organise genuine inclusion?

onepict, (edited )
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

Because it wouldn't just be me, you'd be advocating for, it would be for future you, your friends and your family.

Protecting them from an airborne virus, and the next one, and the next one.

Advocate for clean air, for masking.

Start advocating with conferences, but consider all your events and gatherings.

Trust me, future you will thank you.

@ClimateJenny there's quite a few carers on here, including @MediaActivist.

onepict,
@onepict@chaos.social avatar

@ClimateJenny @MediaActivist I think it's people who could be allies also having the fear of alienation as well.

Standing out from the group means social penalties. So it's easier for them if we conform to their wishes and put us and our loved ones in danger.

So we have to first signal we are out there. Build up our communities that do respect the idea of prevention. Safeguard those welcoming communities and be firm but polite with our boundaries.

Much like any community.

@onepict@chaos.social avatar

It should not just be sick folks like me, or carers who have to beg for solidarity.

If you feel pity, channel that into some advocacy please?

If you want to share that event, that's cool.

Please consider asking about a public health policy. Point folks at the @phpledge and at @chaoss recent badging initiative.

With different folks being able to attend, you may have even cooler conferences. Amazing presentations. Who's missing?

@LAS Hi I love the fact you have a code of conduct. Do you also have a public health policy?

Some folks at this early stages for the CFP may not be able to consider submitting because they don't know if it's safe for them to attend.

@chaoss has been working with @josh to provide badging on inclusion via a robust Public Health Policy such as @phpledge offers. https://chaoss.community/diversity-and-inclusion-badging/

One answer: in your cubicle at work.

Me: Not in France you can't.

Something tells me the course was not written by a French Person. 🤣

Can't wait to see if the quiz does wierd times of day for eating.

Rewatching searson 4 of Halt and Catch Fire, which is about indexing the sites on the internet. The algorithm Vs curation.

How do you index at scale?

It's interesting we're back there again now, considering how we curate it as our web gets polluted.

Interesting business model: UK broadcasters are trading unused ad space for equity in digital media startups, turning them into venture-scale investors. #Media https://werd.io/2024/uk-broadcasters-trade-ad-airtime-for-advertisers-shares

@ben it's how they invested in What3words.

Which led to a lot of awkward product placement in soap operas like Emmerdale.
