I think people are generally wrong about the importance of getting their words right. We underestimate the possibilities in developing new vocabularies and patterns of communication. Reflecting on the hierarchies and judgments built in to your thought & speech isn't just helpful, it's a necessary part of healing ourselves and the world.

I didn't expect the tag to have such a high proportion of posts arguing against it. Or more often, taking potshots at straw-man versions. So here's a small corrective.

Capitalist growth will doom even its beneficiaries to a hostile future. We need degrowth at every scale, as soon as possible, by any means necessary. Use adblock, become a quiet quitter, eat less meat, sabotage a golf course, learn to compost. We owe this โ€“ and much more โ€“ to future generations of the living world.

@vapaad a very common argument is that "people will never voluntarily accept these changes" which is of course negated by your point about what if we do nothing. On top of that, my big beef with it is that it's self-reinforcing logic. Speaking a collective failure into being, denying one's own agency in making these judgments, assuming a false high ground of "reasonability" or "objectivity."
