No doubt I'm going to get into trouble again for suggesting a replacement approach for the W3C's Vision document but hear me out.

Hey! Do you care about the future of the web? Do you have thoughts about where to take it?

Assume everything is an option and you could change anything about the W3C: I would like (in a personal capacity) to hear what your thoughts are!

If anyone has a Bluesky invite in search of a careful owner, I'd be interested.

@fabrice @henryfarrell And he's there, thanks Fabrice!

I wonder if instead of ad blockers we could devise some sort of ad network chaff, that passively produces enough plausible but garbage data as to call into question everything else that gets collected

robin,
@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@quinn Helen Nissenbaum and Finn Burton tried that with Ad Nauseam some years ago: https://adnauseam.io/. One idea I had was also to randomly swap tracking cookies with others.

But it's really hard to trick the biggest violators like Google. They have too many redundant ways to the data.

@robin@mastodon.social avatar

@quinn There's also stuff in these workshops http://www.obfuscationworkshop.org/

Just got an incredibly scammy email from "March on PAC," starting with the now-standard personalized guilt trip - "we've noticed that you haven't xxxx," warning of a purported threat to Bethesda Public Library (there isn't one), and asking me to click on a button to indicate how much I care (presumably so as to A/B test for response and then categorize me for future donations). " This kind of shitty and manipulative technique is slash-and-burning the ecology of democratic fundraising.

@henryfarrell s/of democratic fundraising// — but yes :)

A lot of tech is not really about increasing AGENCY but CONVENIENCE, which often means limiting choices to achieve scale which means monocultures (then of course enshittification sets in).

Watch @robin define the web and what’s next: https://youtu.be/s878bm15mrk

Lots in here and looking forward to his next essay!

You'd think we'd know what the web is by now, it's been around a while.

But it turns out we've never agreed on what it is and why we're doing it. So I took a stab — LMK what you think!

The "IPFS on the Web" track which @dietrich brought together was awesome. I'm not going to detail all of it, watch it at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuhRWgmPaHtQ-TO65P62tqfUM85HCIqSj.

Feat.: convergence on new primitives that make the web better, great JS things, decent publishing…

IPFS is a public good. It's important that it stays that way, that it resists capture, and that it have great governance by and for its community.

Which is why we had a full-day Community & Governance track: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuhRWgmPaHtTIFbOVO5YfXkoFg6wIGbBN
