I think the thing that bothers me most about the post-Bernie wave of "socialism" isn't the tankies, it's that anarchists had largely seen 4th gen insurgent warfare and anthropology of stateless societies as theoretically central, and now all that's been outflooded by a wave of reds whose entire imaginary is basically just the USSR but with a coat of "direct democracy" paint.

@rechelon I've wondered how much of this crowd is also reacting to the failure of the state to handle public health after the pandemic broke out. A lot of people seemed to see that, and then bought into a narrative of individualism vs a strong authoritarian state enforcing public health.

There has been a huge failure in most of the left to conceive of public health beyond state authority, and now we have a bunch of people who believe policy enforced by a state authority is the only way to affect change.

... even though that didn't work out in practice.

i wish consumer protest would die away. standing up to corporations is great, but building solidarity around a consumer identity is not it. i'm so tired of outrage that isn't grounded in material action. much of the time people aren't even stopping consuming the product. they just want to be catered to better. i don't have the time or energy for that.

it's odd when trans people start asking what online communities you were a part of when you transitioned. They didn't play much of a role in my early transition. It was queer relationships I was in with other trans people mostly, then hanging out with trans women at the club and the Q Center, and maybe a bit of Susan's Place I guess. There really wasn't a big online trans community I was aware of in the early 2010s.

well that was the fastest I've ever made it through the DEQ. Got my car registration renewed in less than 10 minutes.

it's really weird to watch non-radical board game reviewers going over Defenders of the Wild. It was the same thing with Bloc by Bloc.

The reviewers who normally review random board games are saying things like "this is my most anticipated game of the year. I really like how you take organizers who fight the expansion of factories by undertaking an insurgency. I also really like the Bread mechanic that gives you extra actions."

The newest Darknet Diaries podcast episode is a good one if you are at all interested in the recent activity of US police forces and specifically the FBI setting up their own international surveillance programs. Including setting up fake companies to sell "secure" comms that are all backdoored.

@bikeshed I don't really keep tabs on either. It makes so many political and media things in the US so much funnier.

It's kind of petty, but I do notice when institutions and people celebrate things like National Donut Day but don't bring the same energy to trans events.

Like members of my family publicly post celebrations of Administrative Assistants Day every year for my sister. They have never once even texted me on TDoV.

Every time I see this BS celebratory days it bugs me because of that lived experience I guess.

I'm like six hours into Final Fantasy VI. It's the furthest I've ever played in the game. The game is super big and sprawling for a SNES game. I think I'm only like a quarter of the way through it so far.

  1. We never had "open borders"
  2. The specter of open borders would have only been a compromise
  3. The actual goal is no borders at all

Oregon friends, would you like a short blog post that explains SB 619 and your rights to get information removed or altered on the web?

It takes effect on July 1st and I haven't been seeing much about it.

Someone should write a zine about forming big queer families and organizing them into revolutionary councils/affinity groups.

Then start challenging power with some sort of confederation of big queer families.

The CNT but gay.

reading about Mexican politics and the history of PRI, PRD, and Morena.

I'm realizing how much of a nation's political parties involve splits from the power holders at the end of a revolution.

even in the US, the two parties are still largely split based off of a fight over centralization vs decentralization and how that maps to individual rights vs collective governance.

it just seems like to really swap paradigms and power structures the old systems must fall away.

three graphs. each show the probability of legislation in the US being passed depending on the support from a given group.

the_system_works_dot_jpegs

Economic Elites' Preferences and Interest Group Alignment for legislation. More of a linear graph for both showing that support by these groups demonstrates correlation to adoption.

rose,
@rose@503junk.house avatar

the flat line in the first graph can be read as the support for legislation by average citizens in the US have near zero impact on if the legislation becomes law or not.

when did "third space" discourse restart?

and why is "third space" now synonymous with "off the internet in person" instead of a particular community space you frequent more than anything other than home or work?

rose,
@rose@503junk.house avatar

as much as I'm for unplugging and getting off the internet into the community more, a lot of the current "third space" discourse I'm seeing is a sort of rose colored lens view of the "good old days" before cell phones and social media.

yeah, cell phones and social media have a lot of bad aspects, but rebuilding community requires actually meeting with people regularly and taking up space. that might require cell phones and social media these days. Just touching grass alone and declaring it a "third space" isn't enough.
