silence7,

Yeah. A fair amount of California’s utility-scale solar is built on land which was farmed for a while, but which didn’t have a sustainable water supply.

silence7,

Hint: “food” is an excuse here, not some underlying issue.

silence7,

Not really. Both solar and nuclear produce small amounts of waste compared with the fossil fuels industry. This makes them both reasonable choices from that perspective.

The problem with nuclear has always been cost.

silence7,

Solar pays for itself within the first 2-3 years, and lasts for decades. Batteries are cheap enough to do overnight storage at utility scale so that wind + solar + batteries do overnight power more cheaply than nuclear.

This leaves nuclear only able to maybe compete with longer-duration storage. Which is why nobody is building much.

silence7,

After the upgrade, I wound up setting my theme to litely to get more legible fonts; the default theme has fonts that aren’t pleasant to read.

One more oddity since the upgrade:

cross-posting doesn’t work cleanly anymore.

When you click the cross-post button, it pre-fills the contents of the form for submitting to another community, but as soon as you select a community to cross-post into, it clears the contents.
