I've started down a copy editing rabbit hole and I'm loving it.

I wanted to remove the word "basically" from any old blog post where it didn't make sense. (you don't "basically, do something" you "do something")

As I was going through I kept on finding other examples of words that could be clipped.

  • essentially
  • probably
  • possibly
  • just
  • you need to
  • trivial

This isn't even the full list!

80% of the time the sentence reads better without further edits

@rgarner another day, another reference I’m scared to look up because I don’t know if I should be proud or ashamed that I don’t get it.

@ianRobinson just came across this wholesome video of someone reacting to Bohemian Rhapsody and I thought you’d appreciate!

@ianRobinson sorry to hear that. Hope it passes soon!

@samir unfortunately I wake up with the exact same error "WARNING: VACUUM FULL"

Beatboxing is a form of vocal percussion primarily involving the art of mimicking drum machines, using one's mouth. It may also involve vocal imitation of turntablism, and other musical instruments.

Bleatboxing is that. But goats.

@stux (hopefully) quick question.

When setting a featured hashtag I write them #likeThis for accessibility and legibility reasons

Masto appears to normalise them #likethis

I'm guessing this is a software thing I should open a bug for, and not a per-instance thing?

@tosbourn@masto.ai avatar

@stux bedankt!

Some Rails apps deploy super quick on Heroku and some really drag.

Sometimes it is really hard to see what is causing the hold up, I'd love to spend the time to understand it more.

@jamie like I’m working on a project at the moment and it deploys super fast.

Looking at the gems and setup and there isn’t anything I can see that would explain why it’s so good and another similar project is so consistently slow.

I know it will be something obvious (what is make-this-slow-please-buildpack I keep setting up?!) but I’ve never taken the time to properly compare or test things.

I've been bitten one too many times when my text editor formats an entire file on save.

With VS Code, you can change this to only format lines you've actively edited as part of your recent changes. Which is pretty cool.

The setting you want to look for is "Editor: Format on save mode"

Being able to create little tasks from within several Google apps and assign them is really quite powerful.

As is being able to see a list of your tasks from across loads of different contexts and projects.

But, but, but. I don't have any faith that they won't silently or not-so-silently nuke that feature, so there is no way I can use this as anything other than a scratchpad.

Do you use #FreeAgent? Do you have a business savings account with #Aldermore? Are you inconvenienced by the complete lack of statement downloads in their redesigned site?

This might help: https://po-ru.com/2024/04/02/a-bookmarklet-to-download-aldermore-statements-for-freeagent

@threedaymonk I don't think I've seen btoa() before, that is very cool. Great work!

I just spent way too long jumping between XML groking, regex writing, bash scripting, to import bowel movement data from a closed system to an open one.

Ask me anything.

A developer goes into a one on one with their manager.

Manager! I'm so blocked. I don't know what to do.

The manager thinks for a moment and says, the great Tobyliacci is in town, he spends his days unblocking developers, maybe you should speak with him! He will get you moving in no time.

But Manager! he cries...

@jamie very fair point about covering up other malicious activity.

I’d almost certainly look to mitigate an attack, if even to send a signal of “I see you” to the attackers.

That said, if the requests aren’t bothering the servers as-is, adding layers of mitigation only serves to complicate the stack. If you give CloudFlare more work then it potentially degrades network requests for everyone.
