Why I use Firefox (xn--ime-zza.eu)

Questions like “Which browser should I use?” regularly come up on the r/browsers subreddit. I sometimes respond to these posts, but my quick replies usually only contain one or two points. To be honest, until recently I wasn’t even sure myself why I use Firefox. Of course it’s a pretty good browser, but that doesn’t...

What are the craziest misconceptions you’ve heard about programming from people not familiar with it?

As someone who spends time programming, I of course find myself in conversations with people who aren’t as familiar with it. It doesn’t happen all the time, but these discussions can lead to people coming up with some pretty wild misconceptions about what programming is and what programmers do....

I’m pretty sure that government software always blows because they think software can be written according to a fixed schedule and budget

It’s tempting to think it’s like building a house, and if you have the blueprints & wood, it’ll just be fast and easy. Everything will go on schedule

But no, in software, the “wood” is always shape shifting, the land you’re building on is shape shifting, some dude in Romania is tryna break in, and the blueprints forgot that you also need plumbing and electric lines

I'm a US citizen, people in other countries, what do you think when you read stories like these about the US health care system? (www.vox.com)

I’d like to know other non-US citizen’s opinions on your health care system are when you read a story like this. I know there are worse places in the world to receive health care, and better. What runs through your heads when you have a medical emergency?...

BlameThePeacock,

The one thing even Americans who have health insurance don’t realize about single payer healthcare systems, is that we don’t worry about it.

We don’t consider it when switching jobs, we don’t think about it when we’re sick, we don’t worry about medical bills… we just go to the doctor/hospital, and worry about getting better or dealing with the work implications of taking time off.

The weight for that piece simply doesn’t rest on our shoulders or minds at all.

You’ve been tricked and brainwashed you into thinking what you have is normal, and it’s disturbing how many of you think it’s a reasonable way to continue.

SamsonSeinfelder,

That is why I think the “The Cruelty Is the Point” Article by Adam Serwer in 2018 was so important.

The ones who burned the books were always on the wrong side of history. Yet, they still do it. And I guess it is because the vile and harassing actions is an integral part of these people. The pain and suffering they bring to the people around them is what makes them feel good. They want to harm and destroy and are actively looking for people who cheer for them when they do. They want to find the people and the places where they can act in utterly disgrace and inhumane behaviour and are not ejected, but promoted. They are desperate to live out their inner cruel behavior as this is what brings them joy. This woman would literally fuck a guy who strangled a LGBTQ Member in front of her.

Adam Serwer:

But it’s not the burned, mutilated bodies that stick with me. It’s the faces of the white men in the crowd. There’s the photo of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Indiana in 1930, in which a white man can be seen grinning at the camera as he tenderly holds the hand of his wife or girlfriend. There’s the undated photo from Duluth, Minnesota, in which grinning white men stand next to the mutilated, half-naked bodies of two men lashed to a post in the street—one of the white men is straining to get into the picture, his smile cutting from ear to ear. There’s the photo of a crowd of white men huddled behind the smoldering corpse of a man burned to death; one of them is wearing a smart suit, a fedora hat, and a bright smile.

Their names have mostly been lost to time. But these grinning men were someone’s brother, son, husband, father. They were human beings, people who took immense pleasure in the utter cruelty of torturing others to death—and were so proud of doing so that they posed for photographs with their handiwork, jostling to ensure they caught the eye of the lens, so that the world would know they’d been there. Their cruelty made them feel good, it made them feel proud, it made them feel happy. And it made them feel closer to one another.

oo1,

Someone tried "April & Bob" once, but MS excel converted it to date.

kapulsa,

Climate science denialism is nothing new. It has been going on for decades. The Greenhouse effect has been known for more than 100 years. There have been urgent public warnings from scientists for more than 40 years. Right now, science warns that the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) will break down (link). If we carry on like this, it will be a question of when, not if. This is just one example. Each example should cause immediate global political action. Instead, we’re living the meme.

Once again: Posting and liking memes is great, but real change comes from actions. If you are as concerned as we are about climate change, please consider joining or supporting climate activists near you.

Is it possible I am intersex if I apparently have a very wide female pelvic bone and everything else is male?

I was assigned male at birth but have increasingly started to notice over the years that other guys don’t have a big notch on either side of their torsos like I do. It’s my pelvic bone. I would go to a doctor to see what they had to say but they’ve seen me plenty of times and said absolutely nothing about being intersex...

Biology isn’t binary. I would stop looking for labels and just be you.

He also called the judge a “bully” and implied that imposing rules, including evidentiary regulations and courtroom behavior, on Trump and his attorneys was evidence of bias.

My wife is nearly home. System alerts me. I quickly tidy my day’s mess. She doesn’t need that after a big day.

She arrives. Gate opens for her automatically.

As she approaches the door, the light turns on for her.

Her night time play lists starts on low volume, overriding mine.

A leopard approaches the house. The house robot with bolt on subscriptions, (the expensive “hunt and defend” add on), wreaks carnage on said leopard, only to find it was a child trick or treating. Lawyers for subscription bot are arranging payment to child’s family for their lost family member.

All in all, it’s really useful.

‘Anti-European’ populists on track for big gains in EU elections, says report (www.theguardian.com)

Populist “anti-European” parties are heading for big gains in June’s European elections that could shift the parliament’s balance sharply to the right and jeopardise key pillars of the EU’s agenda including climate action, polling suggests....

Alterforlett,

Unfettered immigration? Theres exactly not a single country who has that. Some more strict than others, but none unfettered.

You know what other countries have economic downturns at the moment? Damn near everyone. Get your head out of your ass and start pointing fingers in the right direction. Not the weakest or labour immigration.

Christ, this hateful bullshit has been spouted thousands of years and the only times it’s ruined societies has been when it’s not immigration, but colonisation.
