lucidwielder,

just prove none of you value actual discussion.

This is a meme sub. Would be like me getting upset at people for posting Linux related questions under the Linux sub vs some tech sub or Windows sub.

There are proper places to have discussions and if you think a meme sub is one of them then you are going to have a bad time. Whether it plays into the hands of conservatives or not is another debate - but generally speaking I do not think making fun of their religion and views in this manner is something they can really weaponize. At some point they are likely to reach a tipping point where more and more people find them insufferable and start tuning them out. People can rarily keep using the same playbook to engage people over and over without them getting tired &/or fed up with it and them eventually.

A good number of us caught on to their grift early on, but en masse, people are slow and dumb. Sadly they need time to catch up to the latest scams and new mediums.

lucidwielder,

Sorry but Fritos of software is dumb & in no way representative of bringing old chromebooks back to life beyond their support date.

Schools often buy the bottom baseline of everything & in now way was a 4gb of ram a good, decent or proper experience to begin w/ & their replacements probably also had 4gb of ram - just a faster cpu, gpu & ram to hide that it’s lacking ram still.

I think schools could easily band together & make their own education focused Linux distro & then just focus on hardware that’s compatible w/ that’s Chromebooks or Windows laptops. Hard part would be building out an on par MDM &/or ldap server if not using a Windows server.

All Chromebook are is a browser basically. It already is the bag of Fritos imho. I think the hard part though would be to hire an IT guy that knows Linux better than the students tbh. Schools already under pay teachers in the US & that goes 2-3x for IT staff.

lucidwielder,

Makes me less sympathetic for her. Her having kids though & being part of that MAGA culture is VERY concerning though. But you know.. there are lots of men & women that don’t think too deeply about politics & many that don’t share their spouses politics as well. It surprises me - but I honestly don’t think someone wakes up crazy one day.

Also spouses that get surprised later most likely didn’t know because they were too afraid to ask &/or probe into meaningful & telling areas for one reason or another. And many just go along to get along, & I hate that as I couldn’t be attracted to anyone w/ shitty political beliefs & I feel like others should do the same so us that care aren’t stuck looking for partners or a partner unknowingly being w/ a crazy person.

lucidwielder,

He literally has no point - the video says as much too. It’s very much standard practice for rates to go up upon success & why shouldn’t it? Many class action lawsuits work on the same concept but to an even worse degree. The lawyers might get nothing but if it works then they get their pay day. In this case they were paid hourly plus a percentage upon successfully closing the deal that they wouldn’t have been involved in had it not been for him.

He should have considered the possibility of that added expense on twitters books before trying to back out in a hopeless cause.

lucidwielder,

Very true. I remember vbscript. I still have to write some occasionally. What’s funny is that powershell gets all the attention & security applied to it - but vbscript likely keeps its flaws in the name of backwards compatibility. I’m betting vbscript is a huge attack vector just waiting for some major exploitation that leads to its removal or being severely gimped.

lucidwielder,

I’m inoculated more for certain types for sure - but it’s based on what I’ve been around already. I do think certain types of people - analytical types are slightly better at spotting it & avoiding & the types that just love to learn & to change their minds based on scientific evidence. To me that’s all we can hope for.

If your idea of truth though comes from a god or spirit then you are just stumbling in the dark.

lucidwielder,

I do - I’ve both seen & heard some shit first & second hand. I’m guessing she fell into some extremist Pentecostal groups as they both speak in tongue & handle snakes.

Also areas full of Christian’s like that can really wrap the minds of people you’d think would know better. To this day I’m still bothered by how my area ruined the lives of 2 artists that I was convinced were going to go on to do great things. I fully blame the area they grew up in, so much talent squandered - literally any where else their talents would have got noticed & no telling how much better their lives would have been.

lucidwielder,

Oh get out of here w/ that. It’s not bad as much as it’s just stupid - it’s literally a top down approach to social media. Fb & instagram have already made it big so of course they can launch & pull whatever bs they want.

It wasn’t organic & they hadn’t built anything w/ true merit & people are still tired of Zuck. He’s marginally better than musk these days at best. And maybe people aren’t as crazy about celebs & influencers wanting to be seen & heard as we all thought - as that’s not social media - that’s a Coca-cola commercial.

Donald Trump brands US a ‘third -world hellhole’ run by ‘perverts’ and ‘thugs’ (www.independent.co.uk)

Donald Trump gave a rambling two-hour speech at a right-wing conference where he branded the U.S. a “third-world hellhole” under President Biden’s leadership. He falsely claimed the 2020 election was rigged and investigations against him are an attempt to rig the 2024 election. He threatened to revoke funding from...

lucidwielder,

Pretty sure the best thing we can do w/ third-world assholes like him is ignore him. Don't talk about it, don't repost, don't engage w/ his supporters - just shutdown the conversation when his name is mentioned. Only reason he has a following is because of his supporters loving to get re-actions from people.

Don't give it to them.

lucidwielder,

One can only hope. I think it is better if the developers that care about clean UI and workflows were to focus on Ubuntu Budgie or maybe even Budgie 11 or entirely new DE altogether. But as far as modern feeling and clean UI design I really do think Budgie 10.5.x is an overlooked gem of a DE.

It is fine to be opinionated, but I always found the.. opinions I guess by the people over at elementary to be rude, condescending and not really in the interest of its actual users. I think if that weren't the case though there'd be tons more people volunteering to make it one of the most popular and best distros around.

lucidwielder,

I think many were just that disgusted still - but I do agree. Why I left mine if posted under technical subs - otherwise I removed mine by overwriting.

lucidwielder,

Slack too - just pay them $9 to access your own posts lol.

lucidwielder,

As if they can stop the people that literally stood up these sites. But yea - money has a way to wrap left leaning people too. I don’t think Spez or Dorsey started out dumb.

Elon.. moreso given his privilege & weird connections early on. Just glad my gf stopped swooning over him. She didn’t want to believe me about him till more stuff came out that she could relate - wasn’t enough that he he was an asshole to nerds that worked for & with him. Plus discrediting the actual founder of Tesla & pretending the guy never existed.

lucidwielder,

Many of them still act as apologists for some pretty despicable ideas & groups nonetheless.

lucidwielder,

Better way to say it imo, is that you have the extremist on the right expanding at a faster clip than the left. And most people do want to be moderate, they want to believe the middle road is justified & yet it puts them solidly conservative w/o them realizing it.

It sucks it does imo & if I saw equal reactions on the left then I’d call it out but I don’t.

lucidwielder,

Tbh I would rather browse flickr or dpreview when that was a thing than to jump on instagram. Never been on it - but seeing the stuff an ex would post and others I always found it offputting. I am sure it had good pictures on it at one point, but that was so long ago I never had an opportunity to experience it. I assume it was good before facebook bought them.

lucidwielder,

It could if the will was there. We’re able to run water & electricity - but we can’t figure out how to run a strand of glass or 1 new piece of copper? It’s called greed, laziness, ineptitude & creative companies & their lawyers which took tax payer money without delivering the services they promised year over year.

lucidwielder,

What lol? They never owned the internet, more like the users loaned them their attention for years - till they really screw up which they’ve been doing as of late.

I have nothing against coming down on companies that try & do anti-competitive things & pulling an API via ridiculous pricing is one of those things I feel the FTC should have the power to intervene in but I know conservatives would scream government over reach. They already do with both smaller & bigger things.

Regardless kbin, mastodon & Fediverse are all strong responses to what’s been going on & sadly they all need to avoid inter connectivity w/ these behemoths to ensure they don’t try underhanded tactics to destroy it, ironically. Maybe when/if they get to be of similar sizes & the momentum is too great for them to destroy a competitor then connectivity btwn the 2 can be done but till then it’s not safe imho.

Can I use Linux from a portable Hard Drive to use whenever/wherever I need it?

So if I have my Desktop at home, my personal laptop, and my laptop I use for work/business trips, can I have my own personal Linux setup on a portable drive that I can plug into and boot into from any of my devices? Like a cloud Linux setup, but I'm the cloud. Fear my cumulonimbus rumbles!

lucidwielder,

Ha - I actually have Windows (WinToGo) dual booting with Ubuntu Budgie on the same usb stick - plus a non-encrypted ntfs partition. The OS partitions are encrypted though given that is portable. Working out the LUKS details and boot partitions was difficult however as there is a serious lack of good information on how to do it successfully.

lucidwielder,

Why was it linking to web archive instead of the source?

lucidwielder,

Yes - we’re causing climate change but El Niño isn’t helping so I wouldn’t pretend like every year will be worse than this one - but yea it can be on the larger time scale should we not tackle climate change.

lucidwielder,

Tbh the git app or protocol makes it so easy to get up and relocate.. and programmers in general are probably some of the most capable users of relocating that even if it were to happen many of them wouldn't care that much. It's a good portfolio site and decent for collaboration of many projects. Doesn't currently get in the way and provides good or better visibility for projects than gitlab or bitbucket. Till the visibility issue is resolved better by a competitor that offers something significantly better or github makes disastrous decisions then people will be happy at github. Regardless I don't think there would be much drama around moving homes if that day ever comes.

lucidwielder,

What I find interesting is that they basically ripped off The New Adventures of Johnny Quest imho making Ready Player One the more I think about it.

lucidwielder,

Is any of this code open sourced, or on GitHub, gitlab, etc? Is the matrix channel private or open to any coders?
