Your government sites for renewing your drivers license or scheduling hard refuse pickup?

As a government programmer, let me assure you that we're so goddamn far behind modern tech we've only just stopped supporting IE6.

In all seriousness we make sure things work with modern browsers, but you're never going to find a government agency requiring the latest and most advanced tech. For one thing, nothing in government moves fast enough to make that even remotely possible.

Also there's no way I'm gonna learn how to use some new piece of tech every few months. They don't pay us nearly enough for that kind of effort.

EDIT: Oh but I wasn't kidding about dropping support for IE6 recently. It was like a year or so ago, not last week, but still.

The OG. Absolutely hysterical.

If you like that you should also check out Hyperdrive.

If you want some quirky Britishness you might try Coupling. It was written by Steven Moffat, who you may remember as the head writer for Doctor Who during the Matt Smith era, and if you liked the humor during that run then you'll probably love Coupling.

In other words, "you can pick on minorities as long as they aren't racial minorities." Yeah, great distinction.

This isn't a dispute over tax code or which Star Trek is better, this is a bunch of bigots declaring a group of people don't deserve to live and pretending they aren't awful bigots because they're doing it "politely". That's not a "viewpoint", that's a declaration of war.

Been watching a lot of Ordinary Sausage lately. Such absolute culinary insanity and yet weirdly wholesome.

On the more soothing side of things, Townsends' cooking videos are usually just plain nice, not to mention surprisingly tasty. Never would've thought "literally put an unpeeled onion in the oven until it smells delicious" would be a viable recipe but it turns out it's amazing. Also, Mushroom Ketchup rules.

Welp, I'm sold. Definitely trying that next time. Thanks.

Also you're the third person I've heard mention Tasting History so I'm definitely gonna give that a go. But when I'm not so damn hungry. :P

I've made a few mods for games over the years that always make me feel a little happy when I remember they exist. Usually its the ones that I made for my own personal tastes that turned out to be things other people really liked, too.

They're replacing gold with "Community Points", which are of course built on THE BLOCKCHAIN and are specific to the subreddit, but also if you get enough you can have more direct control over the subreddit or... something?

Mostly it sounds like a thinly veiled system designed to let people spend money to buy influence over a subreddit. But hey, it's crypto-based so that makes it cool, right?

yukichigai,
yukichigai avatar

I can hardly wait for someone to find a vulnerability in their blockchain implementation that allows community points to execute arbitrary code.

I will never not love Stalker, jank and all.

What made you choose your instance?

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

I just wish it was easier to use the microblogging side to interact with Mastodon. It's great that it interacts at all, but I still can't figure out how to get a feed of people I follow, or even search for people on Mastodon to follow in the first place.

yukichigai,
yukichigai avatar

That is useful, thanks. Though still not sure about searching for people, but meeeeeeeeeeh I can always use outside search and paste the contact info in myself.

Now if I can just get it so when I click on my message replies it actually jumps to my comment on multi-page threads.

Then split that into a few hundred 1.36mb file segments and send them along with a handful of par files. Not par2, just par.

If you wanna vote, just pass our basic literacy test.

Same idea. Same problem.

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....

yukichigai,
yukichigai avatar

Right now we're in the "every other" release of Windows, the one that's shit. 7 was good, so 8 was shit. 10 was good, so now 11 is shit. I'm not surprised you're having problems.

Might try using 10 and see if that's any better. At a minimum it's not going to be nearly as picky about what it will or won't install on.

What is with the enshitification of everything this last year? Is it because we didn’t actively overthrow the government through the Trump bs?

Close, it's because they did it, failed, and (so far) suffered no consequences for doing so. Pretty well signaled that it's open season for pulling whatever dystopian totalitarian crap you want and the worst that can happen is it won't work.

Also some of the best goddamn memes I've seen in a while. Seriously, it's rare I'll spot a meme on Reddit that I feel like reposting, but over the last three days I've found a good dozen on Lemmy where I was like "I have to share this with so-and-so".

Browsing the internet on mobile devices has gotten so bad in the last few years. It's all but guaranteed that at least quarter of the space on any website is going to be taken up by floating ads that don't move as you scroll. Some of them it's over half. I cannot understand how normal folks navigate the web without adblockers.

yukichigai,

Can't you use the same account on kbin and mastodon as well?

I dunno if you consider news aggregators separate from social media, but if you do then FARK is still alive and kicking. Pretty good coverage of mainstream news from a huge variety of sources, plus some occasional coverage of the less mainstream stuff (usually mocking it if it's really out there). Doesn't have anywhere near the volume of content that social media has, but the quality is typically a lot better.
