@enobacon I’m curious if you are wanting to get license plates only or do you want footage of stuff you see along the way? (Cuz that changes where you place camera. I was thinking you were doing low in back & higher in front, but I may be confused lol)
Can you submit license plate info to police for follow up? If so, good reason for recording the plates.
I'm thinking, for a change, of not buying a local SIM (or eSIM) for my upcoming trip to Switzerland. It's only ten days, so if I use data sparingly and stick only to wifi on some days, I should be able to use my Australian number on Telstra's $10/day international roaming day pass, and not spend much more than a new SIM. Hmmm worth a try I think.
I put the camera down so I could get a photo of the sheath with its bollard missing, and the SUV that is now able to get beyond it because UC Davis driving employees take these bollards out and (in this case) make them go missing. #UCAccessNow#CarCentrism#Urbanism#Cycling@fedibikes@mastobikes
I was reflecting yesterday on how many cyclists on the UC Davis campus I saw doing the same self-centered, unsafe things I see drivers do.
And I know it's because most are drivers who are self-centered, and reckless.
I reflected on how, if we want more people to leave cars at home, we're going to be dealing with exactly this unless we find a way to educate, carrot & stick safer, more community-minded culture in new cyclists. #BikeTooter#Cycling
@dr2chase@enobacon@meganL My experience was that it depends on the context. If it’s a bike lane, then the pedestrian yields. (Shark’s teeth on pavement) If it’s a mixed zone of walking and rolling, then it’s a dance because everyone is going slow enough. I think NL does have some direction about this — having to do with the fact that it’s usually easier for a pedestrian to pause than a person with a cycle.
@enobacon@dr2chase@meganL I don’t think there are sharks teeth for pedestrians, but there are other indicators about which travel mode has the priority at an intersection. Eg zebra crossing = pedestrian priority. It depends on the kinds of roads and streets involved.
This info is for cyclists new to NL 👉 https://holland2stay.com/blog/dutch-cycling-rules.html
@enobacon I’m usually reluctant to step off the curb for survival reasons: I’m going to make certain those morning drivers are going to stop for the HAWK light on a 4 lane stroad with posted 😉 speed of 35mph so I can get to my bus stop.
@enobacon@dr2chase@meganL Here’s a summary of an intersection from each of the three travel perspectives via Mark at Bicycle Dutch. (Video link at bottom of his blog post)
This is a big deal for bikes in Bellingham! We have a new protected bike lane on Holly Street, the most important thoroughfare through downtown, and previously a big gap in our cycling network. Very excited to use this new route!
@alan 👍
Sometimes the city’s descriptions can be rosier than reality which has led to awards orgs & electeds having misperceptions of critical gaps — resulting in lowered sense of urgency for their actions. (So I’ve learned to get clarity on language)😊
@notjustbikes What a massive amount of great info! With good flow from one concept to the next. I appreciate your attention to detail - in the script and the visuals. Looking forward to your progress report & how Amsterdam is reconfiguring streets to match the speed. 😎
Last #BikeNite was on Int'l Womens Day and @mmb asks:
Q5. Have you seen urbanism YouTube videos created by women +/or include a framework of racism/ableism? Urbanism as in exploring all active & public transport, incl. cycling & land uses that foster vibrant livable cities.
(Paraphrase due to char limit: Many accounts appear white&male with few exceptions. Are there any other YouTube accounts that can broaden the conversation?)
@glightly@ascentale@bikenite@mastobikes@fedibikes I look forward to your take!
Are you familiar with the Disability Mobility Initiative? (Part of Disability Rights Washington)
They did a storymap a couple years ago and got at least one person from each legislative district in WA to tell their story. (Part of an ongoing lobbying effort) Since then they’ve been putting together some short videos.
#WhatcomCounty, (where I live) is studying whether our cities have enough room in their Urban Growth Areas to accommodate future population growth, and my eyes are glazing over trying to read this document called "Whatcom County Land Capacity Analysis For Permanent Housing and Employment Needs"...
Instead my mind keeps wandering back to this map I made comparing the city of #BellinghamWA (population 90k) with #Zurich (population 400k) which have the same land area:
Donald Trump has appealed his $454 million New York civil fraud judgment, challenging a judge's finding that Trump lied about his wealth as he grew the real estate empire that launched him to stardom and the presidency.
ICYMI: Yesterday, I released this video documenting an encouraging transformation taking place here in Austin. Excess space in the roadway that encouraged faster, more reckless driving was first narrowed through the use of flex posts and then later formalized in concrete. 🙌 https://youtu.be/lZ_-_-nyjZI
@activetowns Nice to see relaxed pedestrians 😊
What’s the width of that half of the bike lane next to the curb? The flex posts in the bike lane make it look tight. Would a cargo bike w trailer or trike fit?
The Biden administration is planning to veto another Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire tomorrow morning. Please contact the White House, and you could also write directly to the US ambassador to the UN. Ask them to vote for the resolution or resign in protest if they won't go against Biden's wishes. Ultimately being against a ceasefire means supporting further war crimes; that's more than enough reason to vote yes against Biden's orders, or resign.
So I've been using 5Calls.org to make it easy to call my federal representatives (although now I just saved all the numbers as contacts in my phone so I don't use the app much anymore).
But since @resistbot is on Mastodon (and 5Calls is not) I was thinking maybe I should start encouraging people to use that instead?
Does anyone have a preference between 5Calls and Resistbot, in terms of which one I should be nagging my friends and family to use?
@alan
Ok, I was curious & had a look at both options. 😎 5Calls seems to have a broader range of issues and, they have more transparency about who is making the decisions. I also like the script availability for new people. So, to answer your original question, I would recommend 5Calls. (and look for ways to get them on Mastodon)
Are there incentives to convert Mastodonians over to #BlueSky? I feel like I walked onto a used car lot this morning. Please stop evangelizing another Jack Dorsey product. We know where to find it. If you love it, good for you. And hey, we’ll see you on your return trip when he sells it to one of his billionaire libertarian friends!
@CelloMomOnCars That last line tho…ominous.
“If no combination of parties can agree to form a coalition, new elections are an option – although polls suggest support for the PVV has surged since November.”
Aha! Found a secret bike path(paved) on Google Maps! Goes past a significant traffic area... most of the path is unmarked but visible in satellite photos. Will have to go there and see where it connects to things. #BikeTooter
