I really want to get into this system. I don't have it in me currently to seek out in person gaming groups due to some social isolation bout I'm going through these days, but I'd love to try it out if I can find a casual group to meet online with a schedule I can fit in.
It may not be for you, but there are online groups as well. Sites like Roll20 or "games" like Tabletop Simulator allow visualizing what's going on in the game.
The Pathfinder video games (Kingmaker and Wrath Of The Righteous) are based very closely on tabletop sourcebooks. They're an excellent way to experience Pathfinder without having to put together a group and meet once a week. Highly recommend. If you enjoy the video games you'll probably enjoy the tabletop and vice versa, if you hate WOTR you'll probably not like the tabletop version either.
(Also, hi Cyn, I think I've replied on like 4 of your comments in a row, I promise I'm not stalking your profile lmao you're just making good conversation)
If you're not opposed to paid, you can find and join games posted on sites like startplaying otherwise there are always discord groups with lfg channels.
PF is my fave system! Though in my case, I adore PF1e. Been running a game for the past 7 years or so. The players are gradually getting to the end of this one. 2e seems fun, but I love the amount of options in 1e.
And FoundryVTT is a complete goddamn gamechanger when it comes to GMing it.
Good luck! Was the first thing I DM'd too. Could have definitely gone smoother, hahaa. Fun little campaign though! If I had any advice, it'd be to prepare for the unexpected.. That is, have a rough outline of how to steer things back to the 'main' quest / couple of NPCs you can throw in if your players really, really decide that they want to ignore the plot hooks the book gives you.
There's nothing wrong with going off script, but it can be daunting for a first time DM, especially if your players are also learning the rules.
That is definitely my biggest worry. I have studied the entire module and prepared but you never know. I did DM some 2nd edition games but that was a long time ago.
Star Trek Adventures from Modiphius and Dungeon Crawl Classics in the Lankhmar settings, though both groups haven't met up in a couple weeks because June is usually when a lot of my friends travel, which is fine.
I've been playing Blades in the Dark and also Cairn, two games that are pretty different.
I'll try almost any game. I like playing different types of games. I'll play 4E, and I'll play a GM-less dice-less story game. But when it comes to running games, I like modern rules-light OSR-ish games like Cairn because it's just a lot easier for me as a GM.
OD&D - mostly sticking to the 3 LBBs from 1974, with a dash of the supplements here and there. PCs are exploring my Dungeon23 creation.
AD&D/1e - continuation of my 14 year campaign. 3 separate groups in the same world, 1 is PbP, 2 are online (though one will go back to face-to-face in late summer)
Classic Traveller - just the 3 LBBs from 1977, in a mashup of Battlestar Galactica 1978 and 2003 TV series. No 3rd Imperium elements.
My style? I like to focus on roleplay and put the mechanics behind the screen as much as possible, though AD&D tends to not support that. But I try. OD&D/CT77 definitely promote that style of play.
I am currently running a megadungeon in a FOSS roleplaying game called Basic Fantasy RPG and it's been a blast. I tend to lean heavily into the Old School Revival/New School Revival end of adventure gaming, a lot of focus on simple rules and heavy focus on narrative interaction with the environment, survial horror elements, and Combat as War. Just started reading Liminal Horror rpg and getting ideas for some one-shots for the coming spooky season
Cypher System lately, running a Numenera game. It's pretty close to my ideal system near as I can tell. Multi-genre, flexible, pretty straightforward mechanics, player facing task resolution with minimal fiddliness so I can just concentrate on bringing the setting alive.
Also playing in a Star Wars Edge of the Empire game but I absolutely hate the Genesys system. Having fun, but... yeah, it's a terrible system.
I've just started playing in a 2e campaign over Discord. First time playing (as in being a player rather than DM) an old AD&D, so that will be an interesting experience.
I've been running playtest sessions of my homebrew system and touching up the language there, so that's honestly taking up way more brain space right now.
I'm currently running a campaign using Death in Space and a player in a homebrewed 5e campaign. Following the end of DiS, my players seem to be interested in Break!! so I'm looking forward to reading through the book once the full draft version is available, I just wish there were enough of us gunning for Salvage Union to get a proper post-apocalyptic mecha road trip in gear.
Not to dissuade you from playing PF2e if that's really what you want but neither 5e or PF2e have good mechanical support for roleplaying/telling stories, so if your reason for switching systems is for that, you will likely be disappointed.
I'm not actually switching, joining a new group. But for me roleplaying doesn't need in game mechanics roleplaying can just happen in any game. Of course I don't think I've played a system that has mechanics for roleplaying so I can't really speak to that. Though if you have a suggestion I'm always interested in looking at different systems!
