Google Maps for Gaming

Normally, I run game set in entirely fictional settings, and draw my own maps.

However, now I've started a "modern fantasy" game set on modern-day Earth and using the Scion RPG, and decided on using a custom Google Maps layer to pinpoint locations that were and are relevant to the campaign. This is a player-facing map, so they get to see it as well!

It's been quite fun to use this approach, and I am curious if anyone else has done this.

(Note: I am aware that there are also OpenStreetMap-based approaches, which I plan to investigate in due time. But right now, I am using what is familiar to me.

Norton_Glover,

Here's a tool I've found useful for making modern maps:

https://anvaka.github.io/city-roads/

You just enter a city name, and it draws a unlabeled map of all the streets. You can export the map as an image or a vector file.

Thanks! It wouldn't quite work for my campaign because it extends beyond a single city, and because the elevation map is pretty important, too. But this might be useful for mixing and matching street layouts for fictional cities.

True. Though of course, there is an added challenge in that the game takes place several decades in the future, and the geography might have changed somewhat.
