I had read hundreds of systems before accidentally taking a look at D&D, the much maligned 800-pound gorilla that I had passed by and never even looked at because people were saying that AC was dumb and the class system was restrictive and the level system was unrealistic.
I had been reading rgfa darlings and rpg.net darlings and the Forge darlings and Story-Game darlings. Everything from Everway to GURPS to Solar System to Burning Empires to Khelataar to Savage Worlds to Fiasco to Microscope to Blue Planet to Vampire to Montsegur to Freemarket to Sorceror to Fate. Once I actually looked into D&D and tried it it quickly became my fave.
