Broken Congress: It can't fix the border, fund allies or impeach Mayorkas as GOP revolts.

Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas was not, in fact, impeached by the House.

A border security package instantly collapsed in the Senate. And foreign aid for Ukraine as its fights Russia is stubbornly stalled.

The broken US. Congress failed in stunning fashion this week as Republicans in both the House and the Senate revolted in new and unimaginable ways against their own agenda. Lawmakers will try to do it all over again — as soon as next week.

“This is the mob rule right now in Congress — and I’m ready for mob rule. … But it’s not a way to govern,” said Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz of Indiana.

Just 48 hours put on display a spectacular level of dysfunction even for a Congress that has already set new standards for infighting, disruption and chaos after last year’s historic election, then ouster, of the Republican House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy.

It shows how deeply the Republican Party, under Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, is by choice or by force, turning away from its traditional role as a working partner in the U.S.'s two-party system to a new one that is rooted in Donald Trump’s vision of the GOP.

MadBabs,

“I’m ready for mob rule” is her quote? Really? Girrrllllll.

What does that even mean?

They're not a political party. There's no actionable platform, no leadership, no direction. It's not possible to band together around things that they're against and still get things done. Cry all day about it, but any adult knows you can't turn back the clock.

To lead you have to have a way forward. Republicans haven't been able to figure this out for decades because they aren't a cohesive group. They're a backwards coalition of bastards and need to be divided into their corners under dunce caps until they can coalesce into separate parties under actionable terms.

lolcatnip,

Oh there’s a platform alright: Project 2025.

gregorum,

but they can prevent anything from getting fixed while screaming that Biden is to blame!

Mission Accomplished!

034521231,

If Biden already has the power to fix the border, why do they need to pass a bill?

He doesn't, but you need to beware this outcome.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/biden-administration-weighs-executive-action-border-migrants-rcna137804?cid=sm_npd_nn_tw_ma&taid=65c43b4e8b17820001a58e0a

If the President is forced to keep using executive powers to do something Congress was MADE to do, we are that much closer to authoritarian rule.

Let me state that again to be clear: If we can't get Congress to do their fucking jobs, we will be a dictatorship in 10 years.

The founders hated one another passionately, but if they hadn't put aside their petty differences and come up with some kind of Constitution, we wouldn't have a nation today.

These Congressmen and women evidently did not have a parent that taught them how to share. It's fucking embarrassing. They should feel completely humiliated. If they worked in the business world today they'd have been fired.

034521231,

Hold up, now we are worried about executive order usage after millions of people have illegally entered the country. Why not fix the border problem and then worry about the executive order problem?

I feel like this is someone going to the doctor with an arm that got cut off, and they are worried about the skin cancer.

Talaraine,

I feel like you missed the part where this was Congress's problem. For a bunch of people so CLEARLY interested in preserving their own power, they aren't doing a very good job of it.

034521231,

This is literally one of the things the president is supposed to do. How are you not aware of what is happening? I cant tell if you are so unaware of the problem, or you are just a partisan ideologue.

No, the president is NOT supposed to override Congress. Do you not understand the separations of power or are you just a non-literate idiot? I can go all night to refute stupidity.

https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay/intro.7-2/ALDE_00000031/

TLDR;

Over the course of our history, the Supreme Court has elaborated on the separation-of-powers doctrine in several cases addressing the three branches of government. At times, the Court has determined that one branch’s actions have infringed upon the core functions of another. For instance, the Court has held that Congress may not encroach upon the President’s power by exercising an effective veto power over the President’s removal of an Executive officer.11 Furthermore, the President may not, by issuing an executive order, usurp the lawmaking powers of Congress.1

When Congress fails to ACT, however, the executive is empowered to act in their stead! This is the road to authoritarianism, which seems to be embraced by actual members of Congress, and in a way that currently indicates an inclination to subvert their own fucking authority to a presidential candidate.

Don't mince words here. This is an attempt by the alt-right fringe of the Republican party to cede one of the triumvirate's powers to another. It is the END of our democratic governmental design, end of line.

034521231,

Cool, then how about they just enforce the current law?

Talaraine,
Talaraine avatar

Did you miss the part where they offered to close the border just as the Republican's asked? I'm not here to defend any party's decisions, just constitutional law with regard to separation of powers.

When your opponent surrenders, you should probably take it. You know, unless you've got some other objective.

034521231,

You would not be saying that if you actually knew what was in that agreement, literally it would do the exact opposite of stopping illegal immigration. The constitution is toilet paper at this point, so I dont really care what they pretend it means when it is convenient.

Why doesnt the president just close the border like he already can instead of threatening states that are doing that job?

Talaraine,
Talaraine avatar

Whether you agree with it or not, immigration is part of this country. We were founded upon it, legislated on it, codified it. Immigration is NOT the issue here. How much immigration can be tolerated without negatively affecting these United States is.

Closing the border completely is the extreme of policy. If you want to debate those items, take it somewhere else. We cannot accommodate every single person that wants to live here and there are reasons why that is so. None of this deflects why the president and congress should come to agreements and you're not going to draw me into that.

The political maneuvers are. Trying to deflect that isn't gonna work here.

034521231,

The rules/laws that the president needs are already there, he just has to enforce it, its literally his job. If Biden has the tools to do his job, why doesnt he just do it? Have you read about what the bill they shot down was going to do, it was terrible.

520,

Why not fix the border problem and then worry about the executive order problem?

They effectively share the same cause, namely infighting and a lack of respect for the rule of law.

Fixing the border problem involves Texas backing tf off and letting border patrol do their damn jobs instead of having to contend with Texas's grandstanding political bullshit that frankly gets in the way and makes their lives more dangerous.

Same goes for much of the infighting in Congress. You've got a bunch of politicians who do not want to have fair compromises, do not want to honour the constitution, and firing off impeachment processes just because they don't agree with the person. And that group of politicians is big enough to grind proceedings to a halt, a lot of the time.

They can’t lead. They should not hold office. And many should be in jail. People need to just quit the shit and vote them out. Let’s go!

DogPeePoo,

They might as well take our tax dollars put it all in a heap and light it ablaze.

These leeches deserve ZERO pay for their continued lack of accomplishing anything.
