Update 🧵 about my getting in shape story

If you follow my account, you may have noticed that I am on a getting in shape journey this year.

I was on my way to hit 100kg rather sooner than later. I didn't step on the scales for a long time, knowing that I wont like the results. And when I did, I didn't like the results. I was actually in shock.

Now, I don't care too much about the numbers, but I do care about how I feel and honestly also about how I look. I hated both.

@derthomas wow, congrats! I'm always impressed by the loss of weight when people just do without snacks and sweet drinks. That seems to help a lot!

@thomas
I think it's basic math. Sugar just adds an awful lot of calories, and salt in snacks makes your body accumulate water.

@derthomas @thomas It's not just that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM (I know it's long, but it's worth watching)

Something needed to change. I had and still have no particular weight goal in mind, I just wanted to feel better.

I also knew that any special diet would fail mid term and I still think most of them are absolute bullshit and not sustainable.

But I had to adapt things. My diet was basically:

  • breakfast
  • snacks
  • secretly hitting sweets stash
  • lunch
  • desert
  • secret sweets
  • snacks
  • dinner
  • desert
  • snacks xor ramen

This looks horrible if you actually write it down and look at it.

My new plan was simple: cut out all snacks and sweets for the whole of January. Then re-evaluate.

If you are a sugar addict, this is really hard and the thought of not being allowed to eat sweets was making me nervous. But I was determined and I managed to push through.

After a couple of days I started to feel better, less tired. This was very motivating and I made it through the whole month.
What also happened: my desire for snacks and sweets vanished completely.

Another thing that "happened": I stopped having breakfast. That might sound wrong, but for the most part of my life I didn't really eat breakfast. I can easily make it to lunch without any. I just need coffee in the morning.

So in January I lost 5.5kg but I knew from experience things will slow down significantly now. But slow and steady was my goal. Again: radical diets will ALWAYS fail mid term.

From February onwards I allowed myself sweets, but only occasionally. Still no snacks.

I carried on, I actually haven't stopped that and I still keep it that way. And I don't miss a thing!

So in February I lost -3kg. Around that time I fitted in my "old" pants again which was incredibly satisfying.
In March I lost 2kg and I got my chin back 😄
April another -2kg

Today I reached another milestone that makes me very happy:

I am in the 70s zone 🥳

@derthomas congrats! And it really seems that you found the right strategy, that's great

@mbr
Thank you! Yes, I am very happy with my strategy. It doesn't feel like I miss something, which is a key to success.

@derthomas this sounds like a very familiar experience. In my case, I've always failed in the long run with avoiding sweets / chocolate / coke.

I really really should get back to that.

derthomas,
@derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

@inanedirk
What helped me was seeing esp. the first month as challenge that I didn't allow myself to fail. Also it was somehow reassuring that I knew I'd allow myself sweets again afterwards in a limited manner. However this one month was long enough to make my appetite for sweets basically disappear.

inanedirk,
@inanedirk@metalhead.club avatar

@derthomas "sweets" and "in a limited manner" don't even work for me though

derthomas,
@derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

@inanedirk
I thought that too, honestly.
Maybe really try to completely stop for a couple of weeks? I think that was my secret. And maybe if it helps, don't keep sweets at home?

Apologies, I don't want to be that guy that gives unsolicited advice...

inanedirk,
@inanedirk@metalhead.club avatar

@derthomas oh these things work for me, not having coke or chocolate at home. Until suddenly they don't. 😅

Thank you! I was really waiting for the 7 in front of all the other numbers. Now everything else is just a bonus.

    Yeah we got this 🤘

    @derthomas That‘s such a great development, congrats! 🎉

    I think I‘m missing some important peace of the puzzle though. I‘ve fasted sugar/sweets for 6 weeks and never eat breakfast anyway. I didn’t lose a single kilo in these 6 weeks.
    However, the craving for sweets is also gone, which is great.

    derthomas,
    @derthomas@metalhead.club avatar

    @manon
    Thank you! Maybe you are already close to your "normal" weight?
    6 weeks is still a great achievement, weight loss or not 🤘

    manon,
    @manon@metalhead.club avatar

    @derthomas No, I‘m not. ☹️ I gained 7 kg during the first Corona lockdown and a bit more since then. Up to now I can’t get rid of it. I didn’t even lose weight during a rehab where I did sports each day.
    For my age and height it‘s okay-ish, but until Corona I have been on the slim side my whole life.

    Sorry for derailing your thread. It‘s really great your effort has worked so well for you.
