Anyway, sometimes my brain creates really sad scenarios, and I play out my reactions to these scenarios, and it makes me really upset, but it's like I'm trying to prepare myself for every possibility even though it's both impossible and destructive.

@norbipeti@toot.norbipeti.eu avatar

@RickiTarr same. Reminds me of this video of Dr. K. about how we experience potential pain just thinking about things but not potential rewards.

@staringatclouds@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I do that too, reality always goes a different way

TLB73,

@RickiTarr
O welcome to the dark thoughts club 😳
(yeah, me too)

@RickiTarr I occasionally manage high-risk projects, and my tendency towards catastrophising is helpful since we can then prepare for the risks. It helps avoid that behavior in my daily life by developing a. awareness of when I’m doing it
so I can try to stop doing it.

dabertime,
@dabertime@mstdn.social avatar

@dr_a @RickiTarr much of my career involved catastophising.. The ability to forsee potential challenges and avoid them or develop plans to deal with them when they hit. I was good at it.
Always looking for the problems or what might go wrong engages the flight or fight response. Okay in short doses, but really hard to turn off and separate from everyday life, when it has been engaged constantly. This is PTSD territory.
Take care.

@RickiTarr
It kind of feels like the idea is, "If I can get used to the worst case scenario, then reality won't be so bad."

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@stevegis_ssg Yes, like I can prep for it somehow

ScotttSee,
@ScotttSee@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr one would think that going through life preplanning every conversation 8 steps ahead would result in being a good chess player.

At least for me, that's not the case...

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr Bonus: If you hit a scenario you're well-prepared for, people will hate on you for being cold af about the upsetting thing.

There is literally no way to win this game.

mentallyalex,
@mentallyalex@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr brains are the worst aren't they?

I mean, sure, they give us ice cream and tell our eyes to behold a sunrise. But somedays I worry if the tradeoff is worth it.

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@mentallyalex My Brain can be great sometimes so I try to be grateful

mentallyalex,
@mentallyalex@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr I get it. We're taught to hold that organ in reverence. :blobcatgiggle:

"Hey, it named itself!" they will exclaim. Fantatics... the lot of them. :blobcatlaugh:

Tattie,
@Tattie@eldritch.cafe avatar

@RickiTarr my mind makes up scenarios where people are insulting me, threatening me, tormenting me.

And I realise... this was my daily reality for over a decade of my formative years.

Part of me will always be trapped there, looking over my shoulder, trying to plan an escape.

Is it similar for you?

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@Tattie It's more like what if everyone I loved died or one of us was in a horrible accident or lost some fundamental ability, and then my brain takes me through the whole scenario

Itchy,
@Itchy@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr @Tattie
Love them well. And if you lose someone, live your best life in your love for them. 😉

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@Itchy @Tattie Way easier said than done

@RickiTarr @Tattie
Ye-ah. You seem to be authentic, tho. Score points for that.

mike,
@mike@thecanadian.social avatar

@RickiTarr I do that as well. I've learned something though that helps with that and other anxieties that I create for myself.

I've learned if it's not a problem right now, don't make it a problem. In other words learn to live in the moment, not in an anxiety spiral of what might be.

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@mike Yeah, I work to stay in the present, but it can be hard

Neat_hot,
@Neat_hot@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr What if raccoons had little bicycles, but then you trip on one because you weren’t looking out for raccoons on little bicycles‽

StevenSavage,
@StevenSavage@sfba.social avatar

@RickiTarr oh I hear that. It's also part of my job.

jeanettepizzurro,
@jeanettepizzurro@mstdn.party avatar

@RickiTarr
I know it well too. But I’m much older than you and I have learned pretty well how to divert those negative thoughts. The problem is they arrive back in my unconsciousness, as dreams. That I can’t control.

RickiTarr,
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

@jeanettepizzurro Oh yeah dreams will get you

WarnerCrocker,
@WarnerCrocker@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I’ve lived that. Know it well.
