Hello as of about 15 minutes ago it is our anniversary. Today we celebrate 20 years married and 35 together. Tom is the most interesting person I’ve ever met and I am just so goddamned lucky.

By the way just a general comment that if I only studied the things I liked and supported personally I wouldn't be much of a social scientist

@grimalkina
There's a character in Margaret Atwood's INCREDIBLE novel "The Robber Bride" who is a historian who focuses on warfare. And she says at one point that other historians, especially other female historians, are constantly asking her why she likes war, and contrasts this with the fact that cancer researchers are never asked why they "like" cancer.

Once in a great while I write something to my boss or a collaborator summarizing some analysis I've done, and as I read it over for typos and grammar and flow, I think, "Geez, I sound wicked smart there!"

Im never surprised at the mere existence of scientific fraud, our systems are not-so-accidentally designed to reward it, but I am consistently surprised at how bad researchers are at fraud. I dont know the world of human cell lines, but this seems like someone publishing a chemistry paper with made up elements.

Just PICK REAL ONES. Nobody is going to try and replicate your work, and if they try and fail just say "idk thats weird"

I definitely get it but the thing is that a lot of the real cell lines at this point have lots of publicly available data, and any undergrad looking for a computational learning project could compare your newly published data to the wealth of previously published data.

If you think that sounds fiddly, difficult, boring, and frustrating, then congratulations. You're very perceptive.

Do y'all think other countries committing atrocities will receive the same type of rightful and long due backlash that Israel has been receiving.

Will there be a boycott against China for their treatment Uyghurs?

What about Saudi Arabia's treatment of folks in Yemen?

Or our dear NATO allies Turkey and the Kurds.
Or the awful circular firing squad in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Or …

It is 100% true that the Istraeli government has been practicing some kind of ethnic cleansing for decades. And it SHOULD be stopped. And it's absolutely true that it's not antisemitic to criticize the Israeli government.

But I do question whether antisemitism influences which genocidal governments get criticized.

It took us 8 days to get everything together so our anniversary's not 'til next week but the big public one is today.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a relationship?

Mine might sound kind of dark in relation to the question, but here goes:

People change, and they should, it's part of being a person. Some people are lucky, and they change in the same direction, but some don't, and that's okay too. There's no shame in leaving a relationship or changing the nature of a relationship that no longer serves you. We are all taught that every relationship, whether romantic or friendship, is supposed to last forever, but nothing is forever, and forcing something that no longer works, just ends in anger and bitterness. Knowing when to let go is as important as knowing when to hold on through a rough patch, and how to know either of those things is the most cliché advice of all, COMMUNICATE.

stevegis_ssg,
@stevegis_ssg@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr
When we celebrate an anniversary (big one coming next week!) people often ask "What's your secret?" The answer I always give is to never pass up an opportunity to tell them you love them.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

I live in Boston. I'm one of the came-her-for-school-and-never-left brigade. I love that our major local industry is higher ed. You can literally make math jokes and multilingual puns and strangers in bars will laugh. Also I love that I am in a Blue Bubble, where I and my queer lefty friends feel safe.

Big cons are that it is a very segregated city/region, and we're having a housing crisis that causes a lot of my friends to have to move far out from the urban core.

The Big Dig was traumatic, and still has kind of a public works hangover, but it really was that hard. I remember during its second decade a friend in San Francisco asking, "What's up with that?!?" I explained by asking her to imagine that 101 was converted into a tunnel, running under its current route the whole way it runs through the city, avoiding other tunnels, WITHOUT CLOSING 101. She looked blank and said, "You couldn't do that."
