Woof, just worked on a tooltip solution using the majority of @codingchaos guidance in https://sarahmhigley.com/writing/tooltips-in-wcag-21/

I have a running tally of times I've swatted down actually using tooltips at work, but it was a useful exercise to progressively enhance a vanilla JS solution up to using popover and anchor positioning.

Plus I'll be sharing it at my workshop this week ✨

Beware of dragons at the spicy edges of modern #CSS.

Familiarize yourself with "invalid at computed value time" and make use of support queries!

If using partially supported features, mix with caution and don't slip on browser testing or assume your browserslist-reliant tooling is sufficient.

TIL iOS Safari doesn't respect the system-wide font-size preference.

there is a per-site slider but it's more akin to page zoom than font size.

in other words, using rem and em units has no effect in iOS by default. it does not scale with user's base font size and behaves identically to px.

Hey #a11y friends - when do you recommend use of a roving tab index? When do you say proceed with caution, and when is definitely not appropriate?

Having some discussions where the sentiment from others is it can be "an accelerator" for getting though a "collection" but I'm not finding evidence for that recommendation vs allowing normal tab behavior outside of tabs or custom radio-type groups.

(Not so secretly hoping this nerd-snipes some of you into a blog post 👀)

Not loving the way "Tornado Alley" has suddenly decided to live up to its name 😬

I've lived in Nebraska my whole life and prior to the past few weeks the closest I'd been in range of a tornado was ~10 miles. A couple weeks ago an EF-3 (borderline 4) rampaged just 20 blocks away. And there's more to come 😫

Friday at 8PM is a great time to soft-launch a thing right? 🥳

This something I intend to make! I'm excited. It'll mainly be about Web Components, but in the context of building resilient, fast, accessible websites. A holistic take!

I'm planning a different approach for it, using a presale (soon) to gauge interest and shape the scope of what I end up making. I'll appreciate some help making noise about it soon, but for now it's a coming soon page and email collector :)
