My non-blindness physical disabilities are worsening and I have realized after an antenna incident over the weekend that I can no longer maintain my #AmateurRadio station all by myself. If anyone out here is a #HamRadio op in the West Valley of the #Phoenix area in #Arizona I'd really appreciate a DM if you're interested in helping. I'd really like to keep my station on the air. Thanks and 73.

@darrell73 Not me personally, but a coworker soon to retire fits this bill, though in the east valley if I recall. I will ask tomorrow.

There is still something weird about Threads. The most insipid accounts get thousands of followers, and the most vapid posts get as much traction as they did on Twitter. I can’t get any traction there at all. The most pedestrian stuff I post here, Sky, or even on Twitter can get at least a respectable response. On Threads, almost nothing. Nada. Zip.

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq yeah, the algorithm knows your “just political” and is going to bury your content, even to your own followers. Threads is designed to be vapid and is very successful at it.

Just a reminder to my friends and enemies: please don’t thank me for my service this weekend. I am not dead yet. This weekend, in the U.S., is about those lost to war. If that makes you uncomfortable, quit voting for war mongers while you wrap yourself in the flag.

@evan Didn’t vote as I am no where near informed enough to offer an opinion about a specific technology.

To me, the question is: Which of these should AP servers prioritize when choosing a storage method for media: Cost minimizing for hosters, resiliency of media availability, ability to eliminate illegal content I.e CSAM (host ability to delete), right to forget (poster ability to delete).

I suspect there is no technology that prioritizes all of those things.

@jeffjarvis Not to mention the dozens of stories from the “heartland,” where the good folks at Joe’s dinner discuss all their grievances as framed by last night’s Fox News broadcast.

@nlpbot @shoq @jeffjarvis #ALT4you screenshot of post from Sibylle @AHaschi with images of President Biden at West Point graduation handing out diplomas and saluting graduates:
He spent 70 minutes congratulating, saluting and shaking the hand of each one of the 1,036 graduates, plus gave his speech, but it's not worth any commentary by the media.
So you know he did well.

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@nlpbot @shoq @jeffjarvis I gotta say, that is a really efficient graduation to present that many diplomas in 70 minutes. Had about that same number in my high school’s graduation class and it took over 2 hours.

Donald Trump promised to free a major drug trafficker tonight. Think anyone in the media will bother to ask his bootlicker endorsers in the Fraternal Order of Police how they feel about this? Will the media even cover that Trump is promising to pardon a major drug and sex trafficker?

@darnell @darnell That is messed up. Although I do question why the family needed to prevent everyone from eating anything that could have nuts instead of simply wearing a mask. An N95 can easily block peanut dust. We are not talking about some type of microscopic virus. Regardless, the captain was out of line.

I think Activision has been just as consequential to gaming as Nintendo.

Perhaps more so, in fact. They popularized the notion of 3rd party publishing.

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I’m curious, are pinball machines and their arcade game predecessors considered by the gaming community as part of the video game lineage? Or does the gaming community view the history of video games as only going back to the dawn of the computer age?

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I realize this is probably a lot like asking if games are sports. But growing up with video arcades that included space invaders, asteroids, pac man, and pinball machines, they all seem to be connected to me. Video game consoles were just an evolution from PC gaming, which were an evolution from arcades.

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I guess I am asking as I don’t often see people who talk about retro gaming also talk about the pre-computer era.

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@Green_Footballs The interesting thing is it gives permission for the media to cover the libertarian candidates just as much as they cover RFK. I doubt they will give them any oxygen, but it could end up undermining Trump.

@StillIRise1963 pretty much how I feel every Memorial Day weekend. A holiday meant to remember those lost to war, and instead we use it to glorify and venerate. Somehow perpetuating that which we should be seeking to avoid.

“We see you haven’t voted yet. Your voting record is public,” a recent mailer to Texas Republicans says. “Your neighbors are watching and will know if you miss this critical runoff election. We will notify President Trump if you don’t vote. You can’t afford to have that on your record.”

The thing about a "strong" "leader"? Eventually you'll be the one targeted when things get desperate enough. No matter how much you think you are the kind of person who wouldn't be.

@futurebird you’re not wrong, but this tactic didn’t start with Trump. I don’t know when the first research came out that social pressure was a strong GOTV motivator, but 20 years ago when I was still doing campaigns the big GOTV operations were sending similar letters.

Discovered yesterday that Masto embeds do not work on our Drupal site -- as in they are not visible on the public facing page, although they appear fine in the back-end editor. Anybody here know what might be the issue? I embed other <iframe> stuff all the time and have never had this problem before. Any and all suggestions welcome.

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@GuerillaOntologist If you inspect the page do you see the embed code in the source and it is just not visible? Or is the iframe tag not even visible in the source?

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@GuerillaOntologist Interesting. This feels to me like some type of CSS issue hiding it or something blocking the Mastodon.social embed.js. I tried on a sandbox on my end and it loaded just fine. In Inspector, under Sources, do you see the source for Mastodon.social and the embed.js file loading?

When is it OK to change the subject in your reply to a post?

Archnemysis,
@Archnemysis@mastodon.social avatar

@evan you definitely have given me something to think about. I chose often, but I think that’s because I look at the social web more like a party. Yes, it is rude to respond to someone’s statement and completely ignore what was said and start something unrelated. But part of what makes conversation happen is the ebb and flow. If I were having a conversation in real life, I wouldn’t walk away from one conversation to start talking about a different subject they might be interested in
