If you simply want to allow people to view your code, you can just upload it to GitHub or something similar.

By default, your work is copyright and you hold all rights, excluding those you give up to GitHub.

Open-Sourcing your project is all about choosing the license that you want your users to use.

Please, for the love of God, choose an existing license. Don’t go out and try to make one yourself or mix and match. Not only do you open yourself up to liability but it just makes it harder for you to keep track of it.

Choosing a license is all about your personal preference and what your goals are. The two ends of the spectrum:

  • MIT License: do whatever you want, so long as you attribute me. Most libraries use this license.
  • GPL/AGPL: if you use my code, you must also release using GPL/AGPL or similarly appropriate license. Linux Kernel famously uses version 2. Linus Torvalds has issues with some of the terms in V3.

There is a lot of middle ground between these two philosophies. Most of the major licenses have seen some level of court cases. I personally use AGPL, which is often seen as one of the strongest, most restrictive, licenses.

I do not recommend releasing code to public domain. This often is a point of contention between OSS purists and OSS “spirit”. I personally believe we’re entering a new world of AI-driven content and I don’t want more code feeding that beast.

The license is then copied and pasted to a LICENSE file at the root of your repo and, boom. You’ve open sourced your code.

Keep in mind: that commit (and all future commits) will be available under that license until your copyright expires, so long as that license exists in your repo. You cannot claw it back.

One word of advice: you aren’t likely going to see a bunch of people downloading your stuff. So don’t get your hopes up that you’ll have people submitting bug reports or making PRs, etc. All of my projects are just for me to use with one or two people reviewing it for fun. All but one, anyway.

Google Photos/Gmail AI data removal

Hello, with the new AI features being added into Googles services I was thinking of maybe starting a thread about how to remove data from the affected services. I feel like simply deleting my photos from Google Photos most likely wouldn’t be enough of a measure to ensure my images does not get affected or used in these AI...

Idk…the recent Google cloud account deletion was pretty permanent. The company was lucky enough to have a backup on another cloud, which is why they aren’t SOL right now.

I think a lot of people don’t realize that the characteristics of conservatives hasn’t changed.

The south wanted to keep slaves as a states issue. BUT wanted the north to catch those slaves and return them to the south, in complete contradiction of slavery being a states issue.

In other words, “The law only applies to you. It doesn’t apply to us.”

Abortion, LGBTQ rights, voting rights, literally any right the conservatives fight over is literally the same playbook.

I think there was a Law & Order episode where the defense essentially said they should be tried separately, but at the same time in different court rooms.

And the idea was that the defense made the facts show that the spouse did the crimes. They both got non-guilty verdicts because there was enough reasonable doubt.

I know L&O is fiction but I have to imagine someone has tried this and succeeded.

I think I love Bill Nye’s response about the Grand Canyon during the evolution vs creation debate.

Basically he said if the Grand Canyon was created due to the flood, why aren’t there more canyons that have similar depths? If the flood truly occurred at the same time everywhere, surely we’d see evidence of the same water erosion patterns in more places but only one exists.

I’ll never understand how and why prisons and anything related are allowed to be privatized.

It starts with a government trying to balance its budget. It can’t cut schools because parents will get upset.

You can’t cut services because they are already cut to the bone.

You can’t raise taxes because that will just piss off everyone.

So…who can you piss off and they can’t vote you out?

Cutting the prison budget often doesn’t get headlines. But raising their budget often does and makes you “soft on crime”.

So it’s an easy target for budgets, especially at the local level.

It’s out of a need/desire to “fix” what they see is wrong with society. They are angry that the world isn’t what they want it to be and will do whatever it takes, violence included, to bring us back to their version of what makes a good society.

They have been brainwashed by Fox News and other alt-right pundits. But before you feel bad for them, remember that they were racists before and Fox News, et al, just radicalized them into terrorism.
