Career brag sorrynotsorry:
A couple years ago a take was making the rounds that it's impossible to be a senior software engineer with 3 years of engineering experience, that it's got to be title inflation.

I wonder what those folks would say now that I'm staff software engineer, 5 years out of a coding bootcamp 😂😂😂

Actually you know what'd make them even more mad: I started working as a swe in september 2019 and got the staff title in december 2023 🤑

Lesley Riddoch here arguing, essentially, that we all have to bite our tongues, haud oor whischt, and vote , because "they're the only parliamentary route to . I count Lesley as a friend and as someone I greatly respect, but I think she's wrong here: there is no longer a parliamentary path to independence.

@simon_brooke I was thinking about this yesterday. The SNP probably hope this is a momentary Labour swing as part of people wanting Tories out, and being sick of SNP in government for so long. The SNP will just want to wait for Starmer to do unpopular Englandcentric things and see their voters return. But you think that won't happen?

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@simon_brooke

I see what you mean. The SNP plan depends on a very slow and sensible path involving a slow building of public opinion and devolved power, plus negotiation with a reasonable Westminster government.

Another factor is that EU is going to become more markedly fascistic-influenced after this June's election so leaving a UK for that will become less attractive for Scottish voters.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@simon_brooke I find things easier to cope with when I see them coming. I hope not too many people in UK will be surprised by this EU development.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@yetiinabox @simon_brooke I agree, but I don't see it as gloom. I think it underlines the need for us to articulate coherent stories that people can use to navigate these troubled times while retaining their humanity.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@yetiinabox @simon_brooke

Yes, and in keeping with how I see the working class as the creative class, I think these kinds of narratives already exist and are already being embodied by people in their daily lives.

I'm not a Leninist who thinks politics needs to be made in a laboratory by specialists and then released into the wild. :)

So I see my job as mostly amplifying and making more explicit the voices and stories of the people.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@yetiinabox @simon_brooke I don't have any contact with religion in my life, but from what I see Christianity seems to present in different ways, and I think wholesome/holistic stories in Europe are likely to contain a lot of Christian heritage. But I'm ignorant of the precise situation you're describing so forgive me if my reply isn't appropriate.

Hey Jetpack experts. My statistics show zero views coming from Mastodon even though I know for a fact things have been shared a lot there. Does jetpack label Mastodon as 'search engine' or something?

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@dalias ok, so when Jetpack identifies a source it's because the website in question has some kind of tracking? Using cookies? I'm glad Mastodon servers don't do that.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@shuro thank you 😊

@laxsill @Flamman det är faktiskt jättebra. Men nu ska jag bara bortser från Jetpacks siffror när jag utvärderar delningen på Mastodon framöver.

To be clear: I don't have any sympathy for the Tories...

but the key problem they have (like any government after a decade & a half in power), is when, for instance they say they are going to clamp down on tax avoidance, its not unreasonable to ask, well if you are going to do it now why haven't you done it sometime in the previous fifteen years.....

And, its pretty difficult to campaign on a dreadful recent record, while saying well, now we can rectify this often noted problem.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 reminds me of that scene in O Brother Where Art Thou when the idiot nephew says "we gotta get ourselves some of that re-form!" and Pappy Daniels replies "how can we stand on reform when we're the incumbent?"

Brexit allowed the Tories to pretend to be a new party once, but they're not got any way to extend that trick.

My flock.

Just had a horrible moment finding Lae'zel on her back in an empty pond, but picked her up and she's walking and eating. I have every faith in the ability of goslings to survive almost any injury they walk away from.

The two little ones, Orin and Ethel, are really keen to start running loose with the big ones but there's still head-biting, and crows.

Short video panning over six goslings and their dad. The two smallest are snuggling with the camerawoman's leg.

New UK poll, Redfield and Wilton. Sample of 12,000 so juicy cross-tabs.

Insights include, only 46% of 2019 Conservatives would vote Tory now!

And Conservatives don't even have a majority among the elderly any more!

18-24: 29%
25-34: 35%
35-44: 29%
45-54: 24%
55-64: 13%
65+: 7%

Since getting involved in @Freedom_Press I've started looking into the history of Whitechapel, where the press has been based for a long time.

I discovered that one of Jack the Ripper's victims was Swedish! Elizabeth Stride.

And that when she moved to Whitechapel she learned not only English but also Yiddish, since it was the main language there in the late 1800s.

Survation poll out now:

NEW: First Westminster voting intention from the campaign period.

23 point Labour lead.

LAB 47 (-1)
CON 24 (-3)
LD 11 (+3)
GRN 3 (+1)
RFM 8 (-)
SNP 3 (-)
OTH 4 (-)

Survation says

"Our poll from Sunak's first week in office showed Labour with a 24-point lead. We observed a stable Labour lead of around 17-18 points between November and March, while others recorded leads between 16-25 points. However, Labour's lead has risen in recent weeks. Any minor recovery Sunak might have made now appears to have been undone."

I suppose that means my first two questions could sort of boil down to "are the names of the parties indicative of what they're about or are they lies?" ...Labour, the party of business? Greens, not sure? Conservative, conserving what? Liberal Democrats...I know what those words mean but not how they use them together. I need some sort of guidebook. Or maybe a translation guide since none of these words seem to be used the way I would expect.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@tericarol I can try to answer your questions. I could relate it to US politics for example?

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@tericarol

Labour was founded by the unions early 20th century. It leans into the business angle to win over new people and the establishment. Socialist in name at least.

Greens prioritise environment above all. Very hard for them to get elected to parliament but they have more local councillors than ever before.

Conservatives are radical neoliberals/ social conservatives.

LibDems are two parties that merged. Mostly a local protest party but sometimes libertarian or for civil liberties.
