As a kind reminder, you don't have to answer in every single interaction you have.

You can block and mute people who annoy you. Feel free to use these functions as often and as early as possible.

Agreeing to disagree, and enforcing this with mute/block is a very good way to continue being excellent to each other.

Highly recommended.

More context.

We at Red Hat forward port (take a fix we made for an older version and adapt it to current upstream code and propose that patch to upstream) and we do backward ports (take a fix from upstream and adapt it to an older version that we use in our products). Both happen in the open, not in secret.

How many people out there really need source code changes to these backward ports? Not many.

Can everyone get these backward ports? Yes! They are all in our gitlab repos for Stream. 1/n

    I tend to agree with what you said, with one problem: you either sell [some or all of] your private life to Apple or Google.

    I suspect a lot of people with iPhones install Google apps. Which means now, they are selling [all or part of] their private life to BOTH.

    I have an Android, but I install very few apps, and I take a long time researching them before installing. Exodus and F-Droid, despite their shortcomings, are great for that.

    ParadeGrotesque,
    @ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @cstross

    Now, is this safe? Perhaps not, but Google play at least lets you know the permissions and the information the app will request, and it also allows you to block it.

    And I usually select apps that request nothing, or as close to nothing as possible while still being useful.

    With "AI-generated content" all over the place, perhaps more people will get it why I objected and continue to object to using the term "user-generated content" for anything, anywhere, ever.

    It's people, not "users."
    It's created, not "generated."

    And often it's just as creative as any "serious art."

    Of course, tech robber barons want to make it seem like it's some undetermined grey goo, "content" to be mined and filtered and "engaged with", instead.

    A lot of people are (rightfully) upset about Red Hat change in policy, effectively locking their code changes behind a paywall.

    Now, here is the plot twist.

    Imagine Microsoft saying that Azure Linux, which is based on RHEL, will publish all their code and be available for free to everyone, and for any application, and not just their Azure clients.

    Before you start screaming, remember that Azure Linux (and Microsoft) is a member in good standing in many Linux institutions.

    Have a great day.
