Me, to myself, at the estate sale: No, the place does NOT need an oversized harp

dan,
@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@dev When my parents bought their house in San Francisco, my mom's parents shipped them a grand piano as a housewarming gift.

They did not need a grand piano.

They did not have room for a grand piano.

They did not have a way to get a grand piano inside the house. I am told it involved removing part of the front of the house and using a giant crane.

No one in my family plays the piano.

dan,
@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@amytabb @dev We always referred to it as the SPITE PIANO and assumed my grandparents, being lifelong Minnesotans, had just figured out the ultimate passive aggressive power move.

I had no idea it was so common!

dan,
@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@regehr @amytabb @dev my parents never made me take piano lessons! For some reason, it had never occurred to them, until it was time to apply to high schools* and it might be useful to have a musical talent. But then they just shrugged and said "it's too late for him, let's try with the other one"

My brother is in a metal band now, so I guess it worked?

*yes, high schools, because I went to fancy private schools in San Francisco that you had to apply to.

I just opined that the "role" of someone whose title is "office of the CTO" is "and ye harm none, do what thou wilt." how far off am I?

dan,
@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@irene @palvaro it was really great because I had absolutely no responsibilities because I was an intern without a manager, and at the same time I reported to the CTO so everyone assumed I was really important somehow

dan,
@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@irene @palvaro also sometimes people would invite me to high-level executive meetings because everyone else at that level of the org chart was an EVP or something and they assumed I was too

Today I ran Wireshark over X forwarding over ssh over ssh over a VPN over a VPN over ssh over a VPN...

...so that I could look at some packets that contained a UDP/IP packet inside an Ethernet packet inside a VXLAN header inside a UDP/IP packet inside an Ethernet packet inside an ERSPAN packet inside an Ethernet packet.

I understand that every problem in computer science can be solved with another level of abstraction...

finally the org is large enough that there's another Lena at work. let the namespace collision begin!

@kf @lzg we now have two Irenes in my group which is very disorienting

dan,
@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@ai6yr the Minnesota branch of my family is divided into three warring factions: the ones who love Norwegians, the ones who hate Norwegians, and the ones who are Norwegians.

They have been expressing their frustration for decades by mailing lutefisk to each other.

delighted to learn that my wine cellar is the example used to explain cache hierarchies in UW's introductory courses

(the wine fridge in my kitchen is labeled "L1 cache", the cellar is main memory, and the offsite warehouse is the archival block store)

we’re having couscous aux sept legumes tonight and one of the legumes a kid picked out is a chayote. as my mom likes to say when serving dinner: I bet you’ve never had this combination before.

dan,
@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@fernomac @dev @smurthys @ricci @regehr let's not overlook that over in New Mexico, the state university has a Chili Pepper Institute

dan,

@regehr @fernomac @dev @smurthys @ricci reminded of the classic sign in Weed, CA (which I am sure has been changed to stop people from stealing it all the time)

I have been thinking a lot about the old platinum-iridium International Prototype Kilogram since it was replaced 5 years ago this month.

I hope Le Grand K is enjoying its retirement. I hope it gets to live in the French countryside with a nice family who brushes it from time to time.

Me, a year ago: I’m so glad they’re building high density housing right in downtown. Without the parking minimums, it’ll be perfect for students and transit, this kind of high density walkable urbanism is what’s needed.

Me, checking the status in a year: no, not like that

dan,
@dan@discuss.systems avatar

@dev @lzg @regehr this reminds me that the local PNW questionable taco chain used to sell tater tots as "Mexi-Fries"

They recently renamed them, because apparently the name was the offensive part here?

@janeadams @regehr @dev oh, is that the place that angry people keep showing up at because when some IP geolocation service fails it just returns the geographic center of the US?

@regehr @dave_andersen @dev @lzg also, I thought all animals in German were either subtypes of Baer or Schwein
