fine_sandy_bottom,

Everyone needs to make their own choices about this but IMO it’s fine.

Pretty much everyone saves recovery codes in their password manager anyway, which is the same thing.

fine_sandy_bottom,

Given the volume of data involved, I wonder if one of those fancy new distributed data formats could be used.

fine_sandy_bottom,

I’m loathe to concede that yes, lbry does rely on blockchain tech.

fine_sandy_bottom,

I’m surprised that they haven’t been doing this from the start tbh. Obviously they’ve been selling your data to whoever, which is really the same I guess.

fine_sandy_bottom,

I’m so weary of this.

You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake seeking a candidate to vote for who reflects your own hopes, dreams, and values and this worthy of your blessing. That’s not how voting works.

You have a two party system. You need to vote for whichever is to the left of the other. That’s it.

If everyone voted for them they would have a mandate to move further left.

The more you moan about neoliberalism the more you muddy the waters for others less well informed than your good self, who will simply not vote at all.

fine_sandy_bottom,

No.

The more people vote left, the further left the republican policies need to be to stand any chance of being elected.

Dems will always be to the left of republicans in order to differentiate themselves.

The whole country moves left when everyone votes left. It’s not very complicated.

fine_sandy_bottom,

You can believe cows milk comes from cartons if you like but that doesn’t make it so.

Imagine electing a dictator because you believe you should be given a better alternative.

The dems have to lean so far to the right just to gather enough votes to have any chance of winning. You could fix that.

fine_sandy_bottom,

This metaphor is very broken.

It’s more like a car. Vote left and turn away from the chasm.

You’re not going to change the system by not voting- you’ll just end up with the party least compatible with democracy.

Sadly your ideals won’t be represented very well in a trump presidency.

When your car falls into the chasm you don’t suddenly respawn with a new car headed in the right direction - you just end up in the chasm.

fine_sandy_bottom,

I’ve heard the same argument that we must vote for the lesser evil to stop the greater evil for my entire adult life, yet here we are, on the brink of outright authoritarianism. That voting strategy has failed utterly.

This is quite reductive, there’s no causation in this statement. You could just as well suggest that we’ve been led to the brink of outright authoritarianism because of the “I’m not going to vote because both sides are just as bad” paradigm.

As I’ve commented elsewhere, if everyone votes for the dems, the gop will have to move their policies to the left trying to win enough votes to be elected. The dems would have to move to the left to differentiate themselves. That’s how a two party system works. Not surprisingly, if the country votes to the left politics moves to the left.

Another aspect you should consider is that your position is precisely that which the conservatives would have you adopt. You’ll never vote conservative so it’s better to convince you to simply not vote at all.

fine_sandy_bottom,

The dems lean as far right as they can get away with because that’s how they actually want to govern.

That’s not how politics works though? I’m weary of saying the same thing ad-nauseum but basically, if everyone votes on the left then the gop will need to move their policies to the left to have any hope of winning an election, and democrats always need to position themselves to the left of the gop to differentiate themselves. Not surprisingly, if everyone votes on the left then politics will have to move to the left.

It doesn’t matter how you perceive the dems “want to govern”. The gop will push them to the left if everyone votes on the left.

fine_sandy_bottom,

You don’t need “everyone” to be a leftist, you just need more people to vote on the left than you currently have.

Can Trump Really Slam the Brakes on Electric Vehicles? He has vowed to shred President Biden’s E.V. policies and has threatened that “You won’t be able to sell those cars.” (www.nytimes.com)

While a Trump presidency couldn’t slam the brakes on the E.V. transition, it could throw enough sand in the gears to slow it down. And that might have significant consequences for the fight to stop global warming.

fine_sandy_bottom,

Do you think it will work that way?

The more people switch to EVs the cheaper fuel will be, which incentivised people to drive ICE vehicles.

fine_sandy_bottom,

Fuel prices halved during covid when everyone stayed home.

All the infrastructure is in place, the fuel needs to be sold.

Reduced demand will only reduce production of fuel from more expensive wells, like where the oil is more difficult to reach.

fine_sandy_bottom,

eventually

Yeah, but I think you might be waiting longer than you imagine.

There might be a long tail of barely profitable wells with low output, but I suspect the vast majority of current production can sustain a significant reduction in retail price and still be more profitable than simply capping the well.

Every person that switches to an EV increases the demand for electricity and reduces the demand for fuel.

fine_sandy_bottom,

No we want people to vote for the guy who’s not going to make it worse.

fine_sandy_bottom,

I think “all of youtubes bs will disappear” is a stretch. I don’t know the whole state of play but I know invidious has had some instability lately.

fine_sandy_bottom,

OP posted this knowing that it would provoke resident linux enthusiasts. That’s trolling.

fine_sandy_bottom,

God how do you get out of bed every day.

fine_sandy_bottom,

What a silly thing to say.

Every man woman and child thinks they understand how the world works, yet we are all of us burdened by misconceptions.

fine_sandy_bottom,

Well yeah, NYT is profit driven, there’s no nefarious intent.

fine_sandy_bottom,

Of course they do, but that doesn’t mean that every bat shit crazy conspiracy theory has any credibility.

In this case, ebikes and scooters are controversial. Controversy generates engagement. Engagement sells ads. End of.

fine_sandy_bottom,

You’re correct in that you need to stay active, but I don’t think that’s as unachievable as you make out.

Going to the gym sucks. Exercise for the sake of exercise will get boring unless you’re one of the few who actually enjoys being at the gym.

Most people can find some kind of exercise they actually enjoy. For me it’s cycling. I started when I was 30 and I’ll admit there’s been a few patches where I haven’t been on the bike but it’s built up to something I truly enjoy 12 years later. This month I’m on track for more than an hour on the bike every day with no gaps.

fine_sandy_bottom,

most people treat science like a religion.

That’s just not true. By it’s very nature, what we describe as “science” is reproducible. That means faith is not required.

fine_sandy_bottom,

No, my point is that because “science” is reproducible, you do not need faith in the people producing said science, nor do you need to understand it.

You merely need to confirm that it has been reviewed and accepted by other people who do understand it.
