So I arrived at the house today to find a couple of gas workers removing my gas line.

Which, ok, I do want that. But!! I didn't book it in.

In fact, I called CovAU and to ask about the price, but they couldn't give me a price in advance, and their estimate was 2-4x more than the government rate information, so I explicitly told them not to book. And followed it up with an email saying the same, which they replied to in confirmation.

Has anyone else had this happen?

@jpm that is a much better idea. And what I would have done after the phone call I had on Friday.

But apparently someone at the company made my decision for me.

It seems bizarre that anyone would think that reducing public transport fares is a good way to reduce cost of living pressures. It's not going to get people out of their cars because it's a minor saving on the already huge savings of not driving.

So this becomes a handout to people that can already take public transport.

$150 million could get you a lot of extra services. Either expanding services to places not currently catered to or expanding frequency on exisiting routes.

If you want people out of cars and on to public transport then accessibility, convenience and flexibility are what you need to target. Affordability isn't as important because public transport is already always cheaper than the alternative.

@mattcen @jessta sample of two now. I expect that the $50 per week is probably a big deal to people who commute all the time, but I hear you that not everyone can PT. The only place it's cheaper for me to catch PT than drive to, is The CBD on a week day. And only because of parking prices.

I still PT to the city, because it's the most convenient PT trip available, I don't like parking and I do like public transport.

But in general, in Melbourne, public transport is slower, less convenient, and more expensive to get pretty much anywhere else except the city, unless you live very, very close to a tram line (and most people don't).

That said, fixing the timetabling and the bus lines would probably help more than cost to get people using it.

My new place has lots of praying mantises (or possibly one really active one).

There's a guy here checking my sewer and storm water pipes, and he has an appliance that looks like a shrink ray and sounds like a musical sci fi thinking machine

Come say hi if you like. Pink hair, hi vis vest, I'm easy to spot.

It's a myth that Melburnians won't use buses. They won't use buses that are infrequent, indirect, slow and unreliable. But they will use routes that provide a reasonably good service. We need more of them - not just in Melbourne, but around Victoria.
Listen to coverage on ABC radio yesterday: https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/melbourne-mornings/melbourne-needs-more-busses/103661660

keira_reckons,
@keira_reckons@aus.social avatar

@ptua exactly! I've found some bus routes fairly good over shorter distances, like around Brunswick.

But when I lived on a bus line in north coburg, it frequently just didn't show up, sometimes twice in a row (and 20-30 mins apart at best). You can't use a service if it's that unreliable, it's impossible to plan work or appointments.

I wanted to share some photos from the actions, hoping you can see what I see, and meet these strong, committed people.

I'm not in them, for two reasons. 1. I do police liaison so I'm always either right at the back or right at the front, and my high-vis vest ruins the aesthetics. 2. In the few photos I am in, I'm making super weird faces for some reason, lol.

This is Alan, being carried off by five police officers. He organised the corflutes action and video, among many other things.

He got arrested to pressure the people with power to act now on climate change.

keira_reckons,

This is Rosie (I think! Hard to tell for certain with the hat and glasses).

She is a committed climate and environmental defender who has been to court many times to defend the right (and obligation) to protest.

keira_reckons,
@keira_reckons@aus.social avatar

This is Brenda. She organises the scientists rebellion around here, and stands up because she refuses to let the powers that be get away with their greedy, cowardly inaction on climate, without witness.

keira_reckons,
@keira_reckons@aus.social avatar

I'll share more over the next while.

I want to celebrate these brave people, but also show you what the media doesn't.

That a lot of the people putting themselves on the line are older, serious, retired or still working, "normal" people, concerned for the future, their grandkids and other people's grandkids.

There's nothing wrong with being young and wild, but the media likes to pretend that's the only group who cares and it's just not true (not even close).

keira_reckons,
@keira_reckons@aus.social avatar

It also helps you see the ridiculous over policing.

They send big numbers of riot cops, who carry oc spray, guns, tasers and batons, to a peaceful protest of people singing in a circle, where the average age is something like 55. And they say we're the danger.

Keep these images in mind next time you read the police spokesperson say they need more powers to squash protest.

keira_reckons,
@keira_reckons@aus.social avatar

(I'm trying to make sure I only share names where people consented, or already made public statements, so there'll be more as I hear from them)

keira_reckons,
@keira_reckons@aus.social avatar

This is Violet, who you may already know because she has a long rap sheet, which the media loves to deride.

She was released on bail on Tuesday, and was back on Wednesday doing endless (exhausting-looking) media interviews.

Meet Joe, who is the third person facing charges for the West Gate action. And he's the friendliest and kindest man you'll ever meet.

He's empathetic and funny, and stands up for climate action with everything he has. And he's facing prison for trying to fix everyone's future.

This is Tim Read, the member for Brunswick, medical doctor, and climate defender.

He gave a speech on Saturday, and marched too.
