In every reported case where police mistakenly arrested someone using facial recognition, that person has been Black (www.businessinsider.com)

Was this AI trained on an unbalanced data set? (Only black folks?) Or has it only been used to identify photos of black people? I have so many questions: some technical, some on media sensationalism

some_guy,

I don’t know that facial recognition should be illegal for cops to use (though I don’t want them using it, overall), but there should be guardrails in place that prevent them from using it as anything more than “let’s look into this person further.”

Put differently, a report of a certain model car of a certain color can tip them off to investigate someone driving such a car. It isn’t a reason to arrest that person.

some_guy,

I checked your name to see if you were a contrarian from another thread. You aren’t.

Then, I thought about the name you chose. Did you mean to spell Dessert (the treat after a meal) or was that a misspelling? Then, I considered that regardless of the intent in spelling, your name appears to refer to a war (Desert Storm: USA vs Iraq in the 90s). Even if it’s playful (Desserts Storming me, yum!), I dunno. At this point, I don’t suspect we align in ideologies. I’ll stop analyzing here.

some_guy,

Here’s a handy trick that I use on sites such as this one. Between when the article loads and the paywall restricts it, hit a button to display the article in a Reader mode. Safari has this. I believe Firefox does. I think you can get extensions to add such a feature.

When the article loads and then gets paywalled, this works. When the paywall is immediate it doesn’t.

some_guy,

They just want to hurt people. Imagine voting to keep people indebted. That’s them.

some_guy,

This is extremely well said. Thanks for taking the time.

some_guy,

But voting another way will result in my children being accosted by drag queens who will turn them gay / trans and my freedoms will be co-opted by shitty beer companies who don’t believe in Christ. Then my enemies will take my guns and my elderly parents will be shipped off to a commie gulag and murdered to make room for more whatever whatever whatever… I ran out of tropes. Hopefully, you don’t need me to punctuate that this is sarcasm.

These are the things that they think about obsessively. They aren’t thinking about how to make the world a better place. They’re thinking about the things they hate and fear.

some_guy,

I hadn’t ever considered it, but my desire for student debt relief also won’t affect me. I’ve been harping on this thing that I want for the last couple of years. I never stopped for a second to consider that I’m not in that group. I just want a better life for my fellow humans. Thanks for bringing that to my front of mind.

These people are truly assholes.

some_guy,

Totally cool for government to help those poor billionaires though.

Well, Elorn bought Twatter and can’t afford to pay rent (or severance, or server fees, or lawyers), so it seems right that he should get a handout. How’s the guy even gonna pay for his next lunch?!

Meanwhile, my grandmother can’t afford insulin. That bitch better figure it out!

PSA: The Memmy developer has an easy way to donate to Memmy development funds and since he never shares that fact, I will.

I use Memmy everday as I’m sure many of you do as well and Memmy has been getting extremely frequent updates yet there is still not an easy way to donate monthly to support the development of Memmy. He has a Buy Me a Coffee account setup here: www.buymeacoffee.com/gavink but I’ve never seen it posted anywhere and its not...

some_guy,

I just tried to donate and ApplePay failed for not filling out a captcha that wasn’t even displayed. The site also didn’t play nice with iCloud trying to anonymize my email. BuyMeACoffee is broken.

I made an effort. When it’s easy to support creators, I do so. But I won’t jump through hoops trying to figure it out when something is broken. If I see a different option to support in the future (such as Patreon), I’ll try again.

What are your thoughts on restricting children’s access to pornography online?

There are a lot of GOP-controller legislatures in the USA pushing through so-called “child protection” laws, but there’s a toll in the form of impacting people’s rights and data privacy. Most of these bills involve requiring adults to upload a copy of their photo ID.

some_guy,

Agreed. Parents can install tools on devices (or use the ones that are built-in). Kids will find ways around that and that’s fine. Kids have to put in some effort and learn how to outsmart vendors and their parents. This will add to their problem-solving skills. When they finally get to the sex, they’ll be fine.

It’s really about teaching kids to have a healthy attitude about sex and sexuality. Republican kids will be taught that it’s bad and they’re bad for thinking about it. They’ll be fucked up in various ways. Proper parenting will teach kids that not everything they see on the internet is healthy to pursue and help them approach the topic in a mature fashion. Those kids will turn out like the rest of us who grew up with porn online. Fine.

some_guy,

That doesn’t make the rest automatically trustworthy. Just not genocidal. Though I tend to agree with Progressives and Socialist Dems or Socialists more often than not. Regular, middle of the road Dems, not as much.

some_guy,

What could he do? I guess he could go on news interviews and say as much, but you have to remember that this guy is also a monster.

some_guy,

Don’t insult Mr Goodman like that.

some_guy,

The long, slow burn exploring the depths of his alcoholism at the start of Leaving Las Vegas.

some_guy,

I remember being very impressed with their use of text, too.

some_guy,

We can’t stop here. This is bat country.

some_guy,

Terrifying performance.

some_guy,

You know, I hadn’t thought about it, but I guess being against police brutality must mean I think there shouldn’t be any law enforcement at all. Cause I certainly can’t imagine a world where there are police who uphold the law but don’t beat the shit out of people and kill them indiscriminately.

Your question is absurd. Pointing out that cops beat the shit out of people and kill them indiscriminately in no way presupposes that there should be no cops.

some_guy,

As in, “All Cops Are Bad,” not “All Cops Must Be Bad by Definition.”

Is Google having a total breakdown right now???

So, I’m sure we all know about the WEI thing at this point, which is bad and weird enough; and also the sudden move to block ad-blockers on YouTube. I don’t know how that’s going to work out, but it’s pretty irritating. Not to mention, going to the gym, coming home, and suddenly getting loads of fitness-related ads piled...

some_guy,

It’s absolute insanity. We let Wall Street demand enshitification across the board. We need to take their power away.

A sane market would let a company get to a certain size and market cap and say, “Hey, we’re making a lot of money, let’s try to stay roughly here unless we have great ideas.” Instead, we have this bullshit.

some_guy,

You’re apologizing for racism without outright saying it all over this thread.

some_guy,

Time for an educational link: www.whoismakingnews.com/#welcome

Aw, jee shucks. It’s not who they told me it would be! /s

some_guy,

Just take the keys out and leave them somewhere fun. Like inside the car but out of sight. Or on the base of a parking lot light.

some_guy,

I’ve been relying on pfSense for around a decade.
