Though visionOS app submissions are now working again, App Review is currently refusing to approve updates to Broadcasts for the platform (over unspecified new/changed legal requirements) and it’s gonna be a while before I try again because I’m on vacation 🤷‍♂️ Updates for iPhone, iPad and Mac are currently unaffected but who knows with App Review. For now, Broadcasts for visionOS is on ice

The ‘maybe I should buy a drone’ starter pack…

@ryanpark that’s wild! I try to avoid filming other people or flying over them, but we may have passed each other along the way

@jhogervorst that’s a DJI Avata 2 with FPV headset

I was pretty against getting a drone, for all the obvious reasons (that’s a lot of $ to put in the sky and in risky outdoor situations), but now actually having got one it really feels like a true superpower — Creative Mode camera for real life. And flying it FPV is 🥰

I like that Final Cut Pro lets you render a still and save it to the Photos library, but it suffers from that typical iPad frustration where you get an unnecessary extra modal dialog (or three) you have to tap through just to be done with it

(Good shot, though)

FCP for some reason refuses to export a still from a clip in your media browser unless you actually put something in the timeline first…

Final Cut Pro for iPad has a dozen export options that range from ‘awful’, to ‘awful, and low-resolution’. It’s surprising just how bad the 4K HEVC footage it creates is; there’s no control over bitrate or number of passes or anything. And there’s no Compressor app on iPad to queue up multiple exports. Big thumbs down — if you want good quality video, you basically have to send it to a Mac first

@Verso or ProRes, but that’s not very helpful for social media apps

stroughtonsmith,
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

@conorporter no there’s just not enough options to get great footage. It’s quick and dirty instead

Nobody can say I don’t use my iPad Pro 😝 I’ve been working with Final Cut Pro on the go all week (on an unsupported iPad, no less), with about a hundred gigabytes of 4K60 drone footage

@chartier all touch; mouse and keyboard support is awful — nothing is translated 1:1 with the desktop version, it’s all just weird interpretations of the touch interactions instead. Touch works well

Walked along the Cliffs of Moher with the Avata 2 today. Exploring on foot is one thing, but flying like this? Magical

Slow panning drone footage of the Cliffs of Moher, sunny weather with lots of clouds

Here’s a little more from a different vantage point. What a beautiful place

@phiali I am before I fly it, but it handles even decent wind with ease and from its POV it feels easy to control

The difference in experience between Google Maps and Apple Maps, 12 years on, is kinda staggering 👀 I would never use Google Maps in Ireland except for looking up postal codes using our Eircode system (which Apple doesn’t license)

Man, getting gigabytes of video files from one iPad to another without them AirDropping right into Photos and wiping out your iCloud storage is way harder than it should be. I just want a file server; instead, I’m making a 20GB zip file cause that won’t be hijacked when I send it

It gets better.

If you didn’t think an iPad could be like a computer, try running out of storage and watching apps slow to a crawl and start crashing everywhere
