Wow, the Times' Tom Friedman had to reach a long, long way to find the required "balance" -- in this case totally false equivalence -- re Supreme Court extremist judges.

Thomas and Alito are corrupt in their acts and words, but Ginsburg said something true but (arguably) mean about candidate Trump.

Identical, right?

Today my dad sent me a brief memoir* in which — as an aside — he mentioned that he was in fifth grade in (educated, liberalish, moderately well-off) Hollywood, Florida when school desegregation was made mandatory at a federal level. He remembers how many of his white classmates — including the Jewish white kids — were angry and opposed to the prospect of sharing their classrooms with black kids.

My own son is in fifth grade now, and we're on the opposite side of the country, and in a similarly liberal enclave (Seattle) yet I wonder how much of (eg) the resistance to trans and non-binary kids' public existence, or the reflexive defense of atrocity, is the same bad impulses that were around in Florida seventy years ago.

How much have we grown as a people?

Man, every since my visit to Pittsburgh I've been low key into funiculars, these twin cable cars on hill sides where one is the counterweight for the other.

I never thought of myself as a "guy on the spectrum who is into trains" but I guess I never found the right kind of train.

  • drives to work alone
  • in an expensive car
  • with a good mobile connection
  • through silicon valley traffic

For example:

  • autonomous driving (or gig drivers)
  • food delivery; task rabbit
  • agents to read and respond to your email
  • voice assistants providing emotional validation

I really want a modern RPG like GTA but I don't want to be locked into being a criminal.

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1

Many days later, kid has discovered HITMAN 3.

Lots of murder, but I'm actually impressed by how the game is really about "only murder the target" and on the DL is really simultaneously a stealth/reconnaissance game (with disguises!), an open-world social clockwork game (how do you get in a room alone with the target? What motivates their bodyguard?) and a puzzle game that reminds me of the old-school King's Quest games (where can I find a shovel to pretend to be a gardener?)

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1

I'm really struck by
(1) how the mission designs strongly punish the Kill Everyone murder mode but
(2) the play mechanics simultaneously offer the opportunity to kill or maim Just About Everyone, all the time.

trochee,
@trochee@dair-community.social avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1

I'm a huge fan of @marthawells 's MurderBot books, and this video game mechanics, oddly, match theirs —

It has the same moral dissonance dynamic of "what you want as a character trying to be a decent person is not aligned with what the tactical HUD display offers, except once in a while when you get to cut loose and turn on the ultraviolence"
