I don't at all expect praise for caring about accessibility in my talks and slide decks, but it sure is nice when someone notices and tells me about it.

(Personal positive feedback to speakers is great! If you like something about a talk, let the speaker know.)

That distributed companies need to run at least one physical, in-person all-hands gathering per year is pretty well established.

But what would you argue is the minimum and maximum length for such a gathering to be useful? Or what's the ideal length, if there is such a thing?

Boosts and comments welcome.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@hikhvar I used to think that too, but I note that three days together is frequently too short for conflict to develop. To move things forward, you want friction/conflict/disagreement at such a gathering, because those are the things that are best resolved in-person. (This assumes that the company isn't completely dysfunctional.)

Also, in a tech company, does three days leave enough time for hackathons?

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@hikhvar Okay, what about the conflict bit? Note that "conflict" also includes architectural disagreements, friction over people's choice of development tooling, and differences of opinion on code quality.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@hikhvar Right, and the fact that conflict resolution is team building appears to be lost on many people.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@hikhvar Yes, that is absolutely true. In particular, you always want to avoid travel time encroaching on people's weekends.

But maybe, all things considered and assuming you give people ample warning (say, you're planning the event at least six months out), people get days off to compensate for any normally-off days they travel, and you reimburse them for any additional expenses related to family care, those things can be worked around?

So we know the euphemism treadmill, where someone invents a euphemism for a neutral term, eventually causing the neutral term to become derogatory, and the euphemism to become neutral, necessitating the need for another euphemism — and so on.

Do we also have a term for when something is originally neutrally or positively connotated, but is then done to death and becomes first a hollow phrase, and ultimately a red flag?

As always, I don't claim for these to be the 3 best places to go to, but rather 3 good places, among a multitude.

Except this time it's actually 4, including a Special Mention.

I have a longer rant about this that I will write up at some point, but here's the TL;DR: yes, you should attend conference talks, and please stop telling other attendees (especially those new to the community) to categorically skip them. Supporting conference speakers and the staff and volunteers that work to make the talks possible is a very cool decision.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@jonafato I was at a conference last year when I skipped a talk I was definitely going to see, for two reasons. (a) I was in the middle of a very engaging hallway conversation that I didn't want to abruptly break off, (b) there was very professional video equipment and the A/V crew looked like they very much knew what they were doing, so I had reason to believe that the talk was going to result in a good video I could watch later.

Joke's on me: that conference still hasn't released its videos.

xahteiwi,
@xahteiwi@mastodon.social avatar

@jonafato For the record I mean that said conference has not released a single video from it's 2023 edition. So it's not the normal "were really sorry but there was a goof-up with this one talk" situation.

@krisbuytaert Do they perhaps not set the post language correctly? To the best of my knowledge, Mastodon clients don't try to second-guess that. Thus, if the user fails to declare a German post as such, you're out of luck.

Florence, last week:

Person behind counter points out — with exquisite courtesy, no less — that their card terminal isn't working and that for the moment they can only accept cash, and sincerely apologises for the inconvenience. Three handwritten notes posted on as many walls say the same thing. There is also an ATM five metres away from the cafe.

USian person is puzzled that person behind counter can't accept US currency as payment.

Why. Why are people like this, I want to know.

The 🇳🇿 to “Northern Explorer” is, I’m told, famous for its viewing options. And indeed: in addition to the seat cars with their large panorama windows, there’s a viewing platform for some (very) fresh air feeling with just a set of handrails, and the roof.💨
