You’re right, it was a mobile UI issue with the columns/column labels. It’s showing the active number, but with the “users” header. It works all right in desktop mode.
That instance just has a custom homepage written in React. The actual social UI is normal Mastodon with some color tweaks.
It is possible to use different frontends for Mastodon, though. Web apps like Elk can either run on a dedicated server to log into any Mastodon instance, or can be hosted by instance admins as alternative frontends.
I have yet to see a single Threads post in my timeline, or a comment from anyone. And I deliberately chose an instance that does not defederate from anyone.
The software is ripe for forking, too. Lemmy has been slow to update for a while now, and I don't think there's any way they're going to keep up with the pace of development people are going to want or expect.
