Mostly by ignoring all the tankie instances on Lemmy.

Now that’s a solid tip if ever I saw one.

In forestry they use the word “glade”, but clearing is indeed much more common in day to day usage.

Did you read the second trilogy (traitor spy) and the prequel (magician’s apprentice) as well?

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

The ending leads over to the second trilogy, which IMHO is better and more mature than the first, it plays a few decades later. I wasn’t exactly a fan of how the first one ended (though it was rather predictable) but it really sets the scene.

The prequel is good, and tbh if you consider reading the second trilogy, I’d read it as a filler in between, as it’s explaining some of the dynamics with neighboring kingdoms that become important.

Oh I tried another series by the same author - the age of the five - and found it extremely dull. I started the first book twice and never got more than halfway through, then gave up for good.

Never had any outage in SmartTube either, unless they pushed a faulty release (I’m on the beta channel), but even then they have reacted super fast with fixes.

So far I’m using NewPipe x Sponsorblock on my phone - apparently it has been discontinued & archived, but still works just fine as well. Only the comment view is broken since a couple weeks, but I really don’t care about those to begin with.

Oh good to know, I wasn’t looking for alternatives as long as it still works, but that’s going to be the future then. Thanks!

Many US based websites are no longer displaying content to Europeans, since they can’t legally harvest data. Youtube, Instagram and other websites/apps playing licensed content are also increasingly disregarding countries where licenses are expensive and/or revenue is low.

I’d really look into getting a good VPN. Mullvad ($5/month) is awesome, or else Proton in the free tier (can’t pick the server but get one assigned at random, might need to restart to get one in a useful location).

@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Ah yeah, I’m in China so I need the stealth option, which doesn’t work with OpenVPN.

Is amp still around? Those cancerous links drove me back to Firefox after years of using Chrome, they hardly ever worked.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I’m still using google search, just deactivated amp. Initially with a Firefox add-on, now I think that’s a native feature.

But Google search results are increasingly bad, what alternative do you recommend? I’ve dabbled with bing and yandex (which is honestly quite good, but… Russian) and would like to have a real alternative.

I keep coming across kagi but haven’t used it yet. Think I’ll give it a try finally.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yep I’ve just signed up for the free trial and will use it in parallel to google to get a feeling for the difference. Since I’m using google with anti-tracking and adblock, I don’t really get annoyed by the site itself, more like the crappy top-ranking SEO pages. Back in the days, the front page was all I ever needed, now I feel like the good results start on page 2.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Oh nice, that’s a good tip. Thanks!

Die Webseite ist inzwischen mehr down als up. Allerdings ist der Server erreichbar, und via app kommt man drauf, ebenso kann man die föderierten Inhalte sehen, wenn man selbst seinen Account woanders registriert hat.

I feel relief after pulling off my toenails, whats wrong with me?

When I pull off my toenails I feel relief. It still hurts to do but afterwards I get a sense of overwhelming calm. Ignoring the pain aspect, It’s kind of similar to the feeling of having a blocked nose become clear. Is this indicative of anything?/ does anyone else experience something similar?

Seek professional help. That’s not normal.

Do you actually mean fermented, or pickled?

Set your country to Ireland and enjoy GDPR privileges. None of that crap makes it into the EU.

I’d be happy to use Linux full time, once there’s a port of the actual Photoshop and a powerful Excel clone available.

Gimp and LibreCalc work for casual stuff, but sorely lack when it comes to more advanced features.

Yeah I was a bit surprised by the downvotes considering this is the windows community, but then again the Linux fanboys on Lemmy are a resilient bunch.

Funny thing is that I’m using Linux (Xubuntu) as my daily driver, but switch to Windows for those two applications pretty much exclusively.

I’ve yet to use Pandas / Polars, are they working well with macros/vbs and pivot tables, especially importing existing ones from excel? That was by biggest pain point with Calc.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Not yet, nope. Thanks for the tip, I’ll check it out!

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Ah ok, understood. Unfortunately I’m not much of a programmer, I understand just enough of the syntax from macros to use them and make slight adjustments, not to rebuild them from scratch. So I somewhat rely on the tools that some with excel or have been developed in my company.
