Hey there fediverse. I found this thing in with my mom's sewing stuff. There's only one, it has a slit in the end with the circle. Any idea what it is? A bobbin? Floss spool? shuttle?

Yep, that's a yarn bobbin. I recognize it from my mum's basket when she would knit with more than one colour. Keep yarn skeins from tangling.

Agatha, thank you! I do remember seeing them now - but in my grandmother's hands while knitting. (My mom must have inherited it from her!....she didn't knit much herself) I haven't heard of intaglia (for knitting - Just woodworking) and now I have. Thanks so much.

Agatha,

You're welcome! I sew, knit, crochet, Nålebind (only started that recently), and I've been doing a variety of hand embroidery for 38 years, and I'm still discovering things. ❤️

@KarenDorman @sewing @crochet -- You would get a faster answer if you posted this to Facebook. The boomers are still there. 🤣

Agatha,

@jeffowski @KarenDorman @sewing @crochet

What an odd comment. These skills aren't limited to Boomers (and I'm no Boomer).

jeffowski,

@Agatha @KarenDorman @sewing @crochet -- LOL, you inferred that other generations don't sew or crochet when no such thing occurred.
What is implied is that there are a bunch of older generation on Facebook and it may be a simple thing to ask over there for a quick answer.
For not being a boomer, you sure think like a boomer.

Might be time to stop digging there, buddy.

When the fibre arts crowd gets annoyed, we go from zero to scorched earth very quickly. And ageism is something we've really had it with, for what I hope are obvious reasons.

@KarenDorman @sewing @crochet looks kinda similar to thingies i recently have seen for storing embroidery floss on, even though those holes seem kinda tight for this.

@KarenDorman @sewing @crochet my mind has gone to tassels. I’ve never made tassels, but maybe a tool for doing that?

hundertsieben,
@hundertsieben@babka.social avatar

@KarenDorman @sewing @crochet after googling tassel making tools, that seems totally possible

@KarenDorman @sewing @crochet Wife thinks maybe for use with sewing machines, for stitching over thick (eg jeans) seams.

Agatha,

@SonofaGeorge @KarenDorman @sewing @crochet

That's a neat guess, but a seam jumper (hump jumper) wouldn't have so many holes in it.

Adding a picture of one brand of seam jumper in case anyone needs to know about them. 😂

@Agatha @SonofaGeorge @KarenDorman @sewing @crochet Sigh.

Been sewing for 20 years and this picture gave me a "so that is what that is for!" moment.

SonofaGeorge,
@SonofaGeorge@mstdn.ca avatar

@Agatha @KarenDorman @sewing @crochet I thought that. I use the seam jumper more than she does- she taught me how to use it for my repairs and alterations.

@Agatha @SonofaGeorge @sewing @crochet
Well ffs. There's a Tool for that!? I've been using a thick button - but that sucker slips and jumps all over the place.
I'm learning a lot today. 😄

Agatha,

@KarenDorman @SonofaGeorge @sewing @crochet

There's a tool for just about everything! 😂 I always figure if I've thought it, probably someone else has too and already figured out a way to do it. So I look first before I reinvent the wheel.

textiledreamer,

@KarenDorman
This is a guess, but I've seen similar looking things used as shuttles for tapestry weaving, where you use lots of weft colours in small amounts.
Wind yarn through the big hole and the half-hole at the bottom, and unwind controlled by the slit. Could be intarsia knitting or similar as well.

That was a great guess apparently Constanze.😊 @Agatha and a few others confirmed it. Thanks for your great response. I love your art and am happily following you now.

@KarenDorman @sewing @crochet knitting needle gauge?

KarenDorman,

@OriginalLucy @sewing @crochet
Maybe, but there's no markings to tell you anything. They're just holes.
